8 Tracks: Of Italy Vs Scotland With Metropolitan Soul Museum

Music

Often the most obvious is hidden right before the eye. This could be said to be true in the case of MSM, a duo made up of Nick and Filippo who used to the run the record label Teng. Having released music from the likes of Neville Watson, Nubian Mindz and Craig Smith of 6th Borough Project the pair worked together for several years before realising the potential of a musical collaboration.

In 2014 the pair began producing music as a duo for the first time under the pseudonym Metropolitan Soul Museum. Since then they have gone on to release music for Toy Tomics and now are set to release a new EP on Trunkfunk. We caught up with the pair as they put their competitive roots to the test in an international duel. They select tracks below…

Slam - Positive Education (Original Mix)

SCOTLAND:/ A track that takes me right back to the heady days of sweaty warehouse parties with a bottle of water in one hand, eyes like saucers and boundless energy!

  • Slam - Positive Education (Original Mix)

SCOTLAND:/ A track that takes me right back to the heady days of sweaty warehouse parties with a bottle of water in one hand, eyes like saucers and boundless energy!

  • Loui$ - Pink Footpath (1985)

ITALY:/ Soulful electronica. Warm 80s vibe. I can image how if I’d lived in Italy back then, what would I have looked like while rocking to this one.. Crazy hairstyle, no sense of fashion.

  • Boards Of Canada - Music Is Math

SCOTLAND:/ Boards Of Canada are in a league of their own for downtempo electronica… listening music…. chilled, deep and full of space.

  • Donato Dozzy Minded?

ITALY:/ I don’t know if you can define this as “classic” but Donato has been the best producer around for over 13 years now. This one (his first one) mixes so many things, genres, images and feelings, I mean.. It’s class.

  • Cocteau Twins & Harold Budd - Sea, Swallow Me

SCOTLAND:/ Such an evocative piece of music. Subtle moods and lyrical loveliness.

  • Giu La Testa-Ennio Morricone

ITALY:/ The Masterpiece. This is one of my favourite pieces of music ever. As well one of my favourite movies since I was a kid. Ennio, Maestro.

  • Simple Minds Celebrate

SCOTLAND:/ Simple Minds at their early best before they became commercial. They used to play at our local clubs before they became famous and this was one of their best. Raw!

  • Lucio Battisti - Anima Latina

ITALY:/ One of his most underrated songs. Prog rock and experimentation in its pure form, especially coming from someone who had the time was so big in Italy. Magic.
