8 Tracks: Of Doc’n Roll

Music

Ahead of the return of the UK's foremost music documentary festival on the 2nd of November it seemed a fitting time to speak to the organisers who often go undocumented behind the scenes. The art of the music documentary is often something which is hard to perfect, how do you inform without appearing condescending, how do you engage an audience whom already like to think of themselves as knowledgeable on a particular subject. The answer isn't simple but exists somewhere between the moving images. This year there will be a number of films on display including documentaries on Norwegian Disco, Sid & Nancy, Burmese Punk and The Orb. We spoke to founders Colm Forde and Vanessa Lobon Garcia who talk us through tracks and features below…

Them - Here Comes The Night (Audio) Ft. Van Morrison

Written and produced by Bert Berns, this was the title track of an Irish alternative radio show presented by Donal Dineen called Here Comes the Night. It ran from 1997 until 2014, and introduced me to acts such as Bonnie Prince Billy, Moondog, Kraftwerk, and Gil Scott-Heron. The show played a huge part in broadening my musical palate.

  • Placebo - Running Up That Hill

We both love the original but this version by Placebo is a great cover. Kate Bush is our kind of artist – off the charts odd, and brilliant: I discovered her via this version of her epic tune. Placebo: Alt Russia premieres on Friday 4th November.

  • Parliament - Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker

This is a dance floor funk bomb – nothing else to add!
The signature tune of the film we’re premiering on 10th November: Tear The Roof Off – The Untold Story Of Parliament/Funkadelic.

  • Bad Brains - At The Movies

This track is pure punk from the notorious DC hardcore scene – check the whirling guitars and nonstop rhythm that kick in after the gentle intro. Here’s to the maker, The film double taker, The illusion type faker, Guaranteed shaker,…It screams its raw energy at you expounding on themes of deception – vs -reality, lead by vocalist H.R.’s soulful chanting and screeching.
Don’t miss our World Premiere of, HR: Finding Joseph I – 20:30, 10th November.

  • Todd Terje - Inspector Norse [Hd]

From one of the leading lights of the Norwegian cosmic disco groove – it’s funky as hell and we love to get down on it when this hits. Discover the origins of this sub-genre at the UK Premiere of Northern Disco Lights: The Rise and Rise Of Norwegian Dance Music, on Saturday 5th November, followed by an after-party featuring two legends of the scene, at Junction House – Dalston.

  • The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds

This ambient classic was released in the early 90s. A few years later we came across the original source tune from Steve Reich, who was “genuinely flattered” by The Orb’s use of this work and instructed his record company not to sue for sampling it. It opened our minds to a whole host of alternative musical influences. The London premiere of Lunar Orbit: The Orb, takes place on Friday 11th November, followed by an after-party DJ set from Alex Patterson at the Social.

  • Frank Zappa-Don't Eat The Yellow Snow

This is Zappa’s first charting single. As the song introduced him to tons of new fans – including us kids – it also branded him with the reputation as a novelty artist who had more jokes up his sleeve than talent. The track’s flowing bass and elastic melody nod subtly to the doo-wop music that’s at the core of so many his songs. However, Zappa was a musical genius loved in Europe but completely misunderstood in his own country, as profiled in the new doc Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In his Own Words – UK Premiere, Tuesday 8th November.

  • Sid Vicious - My Way (With Lyrics)

This version was as inspiration to both of us while setting up this DIY Music Film Festival, as we had no prior experience in this filed. Its upfront attitude has helped us in dealing with all the financial, industry obstacles and other bullsh*t we’ve had to overcome to make it to our 3rd edition!
