8 Tracks: Of Canoe Inspiration With Nyra

Music

The sonic spectrum is vast, sound is limitless. Nyra has placed great emphasis on this belief and has attempted to release music which does not conform to trends, hype or a linear state. As a producer Nyra has been supported by the likes of everyone from Secretsundaze to Elastic Dreams and has appeared at some of the worlds most prolific venues.

Nyra's music has received notoriety through its appearances in sets from the likes of Denis Sulta. The newly formed record label Canoe has acted as an output for a variety of Nyra's own sounds and that of friends. We caught up with him as he talks eight.

Anthony Shakir - Sequence 10

Breaky, shaky, sneaky percussion, sick baseline patterns, analogue tones, crazy riffs, create a great all round classic, it still sounds as good as it did when it first came out, we can all learn from this track, “well i did”.

  • The Cinematic Orchestra - Channel 1 Suite

Emotions always run wild when listening to this track, it embodies every element a track could wish for, jazz, sweet melodies, swinging percussion, rumbling undertones, i don’t play this track out, but always find myself listening to it and loving how the elements are brought together to make up a beautiful piece of music.

  • Teddy Pendergrass You Can't Hide From Yourself 1977

This track is the epitome of groovy based music, i can imagine this track in the 70’s going off at the paradise garage, it’s also the basis for another one of my favourite tracks that a famous producer edited, a great bit of heat for any occasion.

  • Aphex Twin - Windowlicker

1999 the year of licking windows, according to Mr Aphex.
I remember sat on the settee at my parents house watching a woman morphing in to a man, this was even before the music started playing, then the music kicked in and it was like nothing I had ever heard before, a masterclass in how to make pioneering electronic music, all this was too much to take in as a young child, the start of my obsession into the world of electronica.

  • Da Rebels - House Nation Under A Groove

The perfect vocal hook and a timeless banger, it never fails the floor and i never get bored of it, another stalwart track that contributes to the sound of canoe, play it out and play it loud, fist pump the air or whatever moves you whilst shaking your B hind.

  • Burial- Street Halo

Heads down serious face on, we are in the moment, i love this track simply because it’s different, low slung percussion, stripped right back, a sweet vocal with a gurgling sub base, a lot of interesting music was coming out around 2011 and this was a part of the movement.

  • Mmm - Nous Sommes Mmm

It’s 8am in the morning on a sunny Sunday in Berlin’s Berghain, your marching, stomping, punching the air, (well trying to stand up in fact), then out of nowhere a crazy rave ensemble starts to sound, suddenly, you snap out of your drunken sway and start to shuffle across the dance floor eventually realising that this was the best thing you had ever heard, well thats the first time i heard this track and i was instantly hooked, cunning piece of peak time madness,

  • Debbie Deb - Lookout Weekend (1984)

Oh Debbie oh Debbie, the start of the break beat sounding scene, i remember my break dancing days, those were the days, spinning on my head outside Tesco on a cardboard box, jeez i was good :(), a great warm up track to get you in the mood for the weekend, whilst dancing round the living room in you pants or not in your pants, you decide, ps forgot to mention, love the percussion in this track.
