8 Tracks: Of Alternative Ethereal With A Sagittariun

Music

There is often a preconceived notion that producers of certain genres will not stray too far away from the sound in which they work. However, when it comes to the practicalities of life this is in fact simply untrue. So much so that this very edition of our 8 Tracks series deviated not only from our expectations but from the contributing artists himself.

A Sagittariun will be familiar to many, his resounding take on techno and electronics has made him one of the most interesting within the genre, his music highly praised and played.

We asked him to contribute to our series, his response was unexpected….

"I started to put together a selection of electronic techno music for this piece, but some solitary time with my iPod was gifting me some beautiful and mesmerising indie rock from the early 90s that I loved, so thought I'd change tact and share a small handful of classics with you.  I also dedicate this playlist to Vortichez who probably has no idea of my love for early 90s indie.."

A Sagittariun's new EP will be released on Elastic Dreams on the 20th of March. Follow him on Facebook HERE

Lush | De Luxe

Taken from their debut EP on the great 4AD label, every track is a winner. Melodic and swirling harmonic British pop music at its best. And I had a massive crush on Miki from the band, glorious.

  • The Sundays - Can't Be Sure

The guitars in this are mesmerising and Harriet’s voice is simply beautiful, it’s one of those records that captures me, stops me dead in my tracks and transports me somewhere very pleasant.

  • Cocteau Twins - Iceblink Luck (Official Video)

Aaah, another swirling melodic, three minutes of sonic perfection from the amazing Liz Fraser and the Cocteau Twins. Layers of beauty and a song I never grow tired of.

  • Paris Angels - Perfume

Amongst the big Madchester bands and some pretty awful baggy imitators lurked the underrated Paris Angels. This is a classic, jangly and groovy, like Joy Division on pills.

  • Butthole Surfers - The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Hi-Fi Videoclip 1991

I’ll throw this in as a curveball, not so much ethereal as downright demented, the wonderfully named Butthole Surfers ate LSD for breakfast and turned this Donovan song into a lysergic acid soaked mindfuck, love it.

  • House Of Love * Destroy The Heart (Official Video)

I love the way this comes romping in on volume ramp, really infectious guitar melodies and driving energy, can’t say I listened to much else from these guys but this is a classic indie jam from that period.

  • Ultra Vivid Scene - Mercy Seat (Official Video)

Another gem from the 4AD label, the heavy and chugging psychedelic pop of NYCs Ultra Vivid Scene. Really transports me back to the early 90s and hasn’t dated. Moby was a band member around this time, I’m guessing before his techno career took off.

  • Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station

So much more than shoegaze, I love this wall of sound, very transcendental , I want this playing on the spaceship when it takes us up to Mars, I wanna make love to my girlfriend with this playing really loudly, I’d happily die to this song, oh music is such a powerful thing.
