8 Tracks: Last Track Of The Night With The Beat Escape

Music

Montreal-based electronic duo The Beat Escape was formed by musicians Addy Weitzman and Patrick A. Boivin who united over their love of synth pop and new wave. Following a 2016 introductory EP on Bella Union, the boys are about to return with their debut Life Is Short the Answer's Long.

Ahead of the album release on Friday, the duo have put together this excellent 8 Tracks selection for us: "After dancing for hours to techno, we always love it when a DJ plays a weirdo pop track at the end of their set. It's often the most memorable moment of the night." From Larry Levan and Pet Shop Boys to Serge Gainsbourg and Molly Nilsson, dig in below…

Life Is Short the Answer's Long is out 27th April via Bella Union. Pre-order it here.

Serge Gainsbourg - My Lady Héroïne

If you play this track at a party we can almost guarantee that it will be the track of the night. There’s just some kind of a weird energy about it, every time it comes on everyone gets the urge to lock elbows and dance around in circles. Ridiculously laughing all troubles away.

If you play this track at a party we can almost guarantee that it will be the track of the night. There’s just some kind of a weird energy about it, every time it comes on everyone gets the urge to lock elbows and dance around in circles. Ridiculously laughing all troubles away.

  • Chris Rea - Josephine

Heard this for the first time on the Autobahn with our friend Molly. She had a ‘Best of Chris Rea’ CD – we were like…. yeah yeah we’ve heard of him – but we hadn’t. This is his biggest hit and is the ultimate balearic bomb. Kind of sounds like him trying to be J.J. Cale but in a very expensive studio. Pure E.

  • Donna Summer - State Of Independence

Classic. This is Donna Summer covering Jon & Vangelis. There’s also an edit of this done by this guy called JAZ (who is a preacher) which was always a killer at weird parties – was the NYE ball drop song with our friends for years. This version though is an epic and albeit very worldly last track.

  • Celestial Choir - Stand On The Word (Larry Levan Mix)

This is a bit of an obvious call – but in the right circumstances, worth it. We closed a “set” once whilst DJing at The Emerald one night where it was packed and it just became an anthem. Several Hasidic men started lighting hash joints and throwing their kippas in the air, the whole bar started singing along, jumping up & down, was really a special moment.

  • Molly Nilsson - 1995

Probably our favourite song ever made. We toured with Molly last summer and every night when she sang this song, we both just cried and cried and cried – it was amazing.

  • Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring

So emotional, so groovy, so nostalgic – all the ingredients of young LOVE. Beautiful stuff. Truly perfect. Also found out recently that the bass line on this was made with a 303 – dope.

  • Fpu - Crockett's Theme

Being the last track on Tiga’s Mixed Emotions CD2, this track effectively changed Addy’s life and therefore indirectly changed Patrick’s as well. Any DJ who’d play this as their last track, even if everything played before was completely soulless, their credibility would be instantly restored.

  • Julie London - The End Of A Love Affair

This is kind of like a last last track of the night – like after the last track – would love to hear this after one of the above. For waltzing around, clinking glasses & spilling champagne all over the place in an elegantly wasted type of fashion.
