8 Tracks – Katie Gately

Music

Ahead of her forthcoming release on Blue Tapes (made only with the human voice), Katie Gately has let us in on the influences that have helped her form her extremely unique sound.

The result of all these influences is Pipes, a piece that is both concise and ambitious. A 22nd Century pop song made out of nothing but the massed tones of the human voice, so complex that it took six painstaking months to assemble, but dropkicks the seratonin-releasing pleasure centres of the brain like the most immediate and narcotic of pop hits.Synthesizers have been superseded by lungs, and soundscapes are no longer programmed, but can be projected into the air at the speed of thought.

Otis Redding - These Arms Of Mine

If I could only listen to one song for the rest of time, it would be this one. You just can’t sing like this if your heart isn’t totally open. Otis Redding makes me want to be a better person.

  • Otis Redding - These Arms Of Mine

If I could only listen to one song for the rest of time, it would be this one. You just can’t sing like this if your heart isn’t totally open. Otis Redding makes me want to be a better person.

  • This Heat - Horizontal Hold (peel Session)

It’s difficult for my brain to process this amount of pleasure without self-destructing. The intensity, u-turns, impulsivity and funkiness are exactly what I want to give and to get out of music.

  • Dirty Three - I Offered It Up To The Stars & The Night Sky

Traffic jams inside of lullabies and/or pastoral death metal. When I die, I hope its like this.

  • Billy Joel - The Longest Time

Some people are raised to believe in God but I was raised to believe in Billy Joel and I can’t suppress the magic he makes me feel. This one, in particular, inspires me to not give a fuck.

  • Nine Inch Nails - Closer

Early NIN percussion is a huge inspiration for me but this is just a perfect pop song and helped me learn how to make beats. Trent Reznor is the ultimate badass.

  • Bardo Pond - Tommy Gun Angel

I’m always hunting for sounds that can hijack the brain and induce involuntary head-banging. The hugeness of this distortion kills me and Isobel Sollenberger’s voice is a perfect companion.

  • Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River

The weird and wonderful mouth clicks/noises on here are what my dreams are made of. Justin Timberlake is a truly ridiculous person who I very much adore but it is Timbaland who I really want to be.

  • Joanna Newsom - Only Skin

Boundless, ornate, rambling and warm, with a payoff that makes my chest explode. I can only bow down in gratitude that something this beautiful really exists.
