8 Tracks From The Outside – Débruit

Music

French musician/producer Débruit is something of an explorer – not in the same way as Dora, he's just very keen to explore the depth of musical wonders from around the world that others seem afraid to even touch upon. His brand of electronic music sounds distinctly more human than most, fitting him outside of many of the generic boxes which people seem so keen to impress upon the world. His LP Outside The Line has just dropped so we asked him to tell us about some of his favourite sounds from the outside.

Outside The Line is out now via ICI.

Liquid Liquid Live At Hurrah

I love the rhythmic energy in this track. I got to know Liquid Liquid because of Optimo when I lived in Glasgow. The club is named after one of their tracks and I actually saw them perform live at the Sub Club for them.

  • Konono N°1 - Lufuala Ndonga

Konono n°1 is such a pleasure to see live, you end up moving like crazy in a trance state without really understanding how you arrived there. The way I play the rhodes in a percussive way and with quite a bit of overdrive on the album is inspired by Konono’s sound.

  • Suicide- Ghost Rider (Live 1977-1978)

This loopy electric synthetic sound and the way everything is really intense inspires me. The beginning of the track ‘Stand Up’ is influenced by that feeling.

  • Niger Chanson Traditionnelle(Peulh)

I’ve been listening to a lot of field recordings from Niger, I couldn’t find anything from the Azawagh but this is also amazing. I like the textures, the patterns, the loops – interesting layers that embrace one another.

  • Kraftwerk - Das Model

Kraftwerk’s cold, precise, mechanical sound is definitely an influence.

  • Fase - Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker & Michele Anne De Mey

Both the visuals and music are an influence in this piece.

  • King Tubby - Badness Dub

I like the grittiness, the sounds of the echo. Definitely an influence in the way I treated the sound on the new album.

  • Mammane Sani Et Son Orgue - Bodo

Another kind of music from Niger. I wish I could stay as minimal as this.
