NKC Marie

This jerk of spasmodic scattershot has been picking up props from the UK hybrid-house scenes big players (L-Vis/ Bok Bok/ Lil Silva etc) and rightly so. Marie is built from a jungle heart of stabbing synth steel drums and wild conga rolls. Its rhythmic base twitches within a 4/4 structure, kick drums aching to burst out at any moment, sporadically augmented by gun cracking percussion and squals of low bass. This is the 19 year old NRKs debut release, and sums up all that is exciting about a constantly mutating English sound, call it Funky if you want- a meeting of nervy melodic ticks and euphoric, complex drum patterns making a uniquely modern sounding whole. 9/10
