google enter sochi olympics gay rights debate

The Winter Olympics kick off today – with the opening ceremony taking place this afternoon, marking the start of one of the most controversial games in Olympic history.
The debate and protests have raged for what seems like an eternity – focused predominantly on Russia’s almost medieval homophobic laws and poor human rights record. Many world leaders have boycotted the event altogether and criticism and concerns have been voiced from all corners. Still, though, it’s a surprise to see Google wading in on the debate.
Today’s Google doodle features the rainbow flag, overlaid with silhouettes of sportsmen and women engaging in winter sports – and a short piece of text beneath, which reads:
“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”
Good on Google, shame on Putin.
