Truth And Lies – The Percussion Discussion Mix

Music

Nothing beats a nice bit of rhythm and we've got just the ticket to get your hips shaking, no matter the time or place. The pairing of Truth and Lies (not that one of them is Truth and the other Lies, that would be ridiculous) are prime providers of such fine rhythmosity. These beat-combiners have been really getting into the swing of making mixes ahead of Africa Oye and they've treated us to their Percussion Discussion mix. To celebrate this uplifting, hour-long, toe-tapping beauty, we had a good ol' chin-wag with one half of Truth & Lies – Justin Turford;

Who are you?

Justin Turford AKA Ex-Friendly – one half of Truth & Lies Music alongside Joff Casciani.

Where are you?

Nottingham, UK.

What are you?

Producers, DJs, Designers, Writers, Blaggers.

Do you bless the rains down in Africa?

Every Friday 3pm on the dot.

Have you ever considered being a town crier?

Been a city moaner.

Tell us one truth and two lies.

Truth: The truth is out there… Lies: 1) I know the truth. 2) This is the truth.

What's the funniest thing you've ever seen? (I saw a woman slip on a banana peel yesterday and it was hilarious…)

I just saw a puppy fall asleep on Youtube – so funny! They should have more things like that on the net…

If you had a pet lion what would you name it, where would you keep it and what would you feed it?

I would call her Tiger and I would keep her behind the decks and feed her EDM MP3s.

Where do planes come from?

Spain, mainly…

Can you balance a spoon on your nose? How about any other body parts?

What size spoon? Ladle yes, teaspoon no.

What are your views on this, the biggest news of the week?

Are they going to have a BBQ at this vigil?

Enough of my nonsense, onto the mix…

Where was the mix recorded?

In my kitchen.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In the sunshine, barefoot, sipping rum and ginger, surrounded by the funkiest people in history (or just anywhere but my kitchen).

What should we be wearing?

Just enough.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

A medium sized local beach bar in Cuba, Funktion 1, vinyl (will require some shade..and fans).

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Baba Commandant And The Mandingo Band – 'Tile'.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Man, too many to mention! Let's try Larry Levan live at Paradise Garage (old Strut release) or Andy Weatherall live at Bounce 1992 (DIY night)

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Jimmy Saville so I could throttle the bastard.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It was probably two cassette decks and a single belt drive deck. now it's two 1210s and a Pioneer mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Depends on who is playing before you and after you with that one but if you mean a home mix, then the first.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First with my own money was a 1950s Rock n Roll compilation of British artists (I had aspirations to be Buddy Holly), last was a 12" by some Ethiopian producer called E R, amazingly sophisticated but odd mixture of traditional music, Trap, House and Electronica.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Mango ice cream (with nutty bits).

If it was an animal what would it be?

A stoned Honey Badger.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

That'll be half of my collection! Asa Chang and Junray 'Hana' – beautiful but bonkers.

Upcoming in the world of Truth and Lies?

DJing at Rave Against Racism and Africa Oye festivals in June, launching the label finally, curating some exciting events and organising an amphibious invasion of anywhere warmer than here…

Anything else we need to discuss?

Check out our little online magazine where we interview people and stuff (upcoming is Cassetteboy) and I've got new releases on Hot Digits and ISM (plug life).

Africa Oye takes place in Sefton Park, Liverpool on 20th and 21st June – click here for more information.
