REMAIN - The Ransom Note Mix

We've been on a pretty Gallic tip the past few weeks on R$N… and in steps Remain for this week's Ransom Note mix. Co-founder of Paris-based label Meant Records, he's become one of the figureheads in a very healthy French techno scene at the momen. For fear of sounding like a bunch of pretentious toss, they've rediscovered the groove and returned it to the center of the dancefloor experience.

Remain's sonic universe is decidedly dark and ruthlessly efficient. His aesthetic unites an ultramodern vision of the dance floor…

Let's get it on and then have a chat to to him about the mix.

Where was the mix recorded?

Paris, in my studio, late at night.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Whatever you feel is convenient. But listening to it during a late night walk with an inspiring and shadowy urban landscape around you would probably work best.

What should we be wearing?

I’d recommend anything that would prevent this walk from turn into something bad for you mate!

What would be your dream setting to record a mix?

I don’t really care about the setting unless it is with equipment that doesn’t work properly. I’d rather say where: Anywhere especially live and full of the tense momentum.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

The 1st, the 4th and the 10th. Really sorry i can’t choose only one.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

As above with the tracks, i can’t really choose one. Lately, Alien Alien’s DJ Set at Animal Social Club in Rome really blew the room…and my mind.
Hopefully they recorded it. You should ask them.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Trevor Jackson. No explanation needed, right?!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

First set up was harsh! Made of old turntables, a shitty mixer and the worst speakers. Almost the same elements now but difference is I got better gear…and not at home !

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

In that particular case the first track of the mix is one of Vosper’s new hits (out on Meant later this year) and the last one is an old track i’ve always loved and played a lot…Both are really important to me.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first record I bought was a cassette for a lovely girl I liked. I was really young – probably 7 or 8 – so what it was, will stay between her and me.
Last ones would be the Red Axes and Jokers Of The Scenes LPs. Both incredible.
