Light Year – THE RANSOM NOTE MIX

Music

Pummel; strike repeatedly with the fists.

Light Year came to be, many aeons ago, in a celestial orb… this year he released his Come Together first EP on the very excellent Ghostly International.

Now he is imparting the next Ransom Note mix. Cans on, fist in the air, pummel the ears… here we go:

Who are you? Where are you? What are you?

Ciao I'm Jordan otherwise known as Light Year, I am currently in my living room writing answers to an in-depth interview and I am sparkling!!

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded in my friends studio in deep dark south London.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

The tracks were mixed with a club setting in mind, primarily the transition from warming up and setting a groove then moving to more peak time vibes.

What should we be wearing

Your fancy pants and your girlfriend should sporting her finest pair of dancing shoes.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format.

A damp smelling abandoned bunker filled with less than 100 people somewhere in eastern europe, with a Function One, two turntables, two CDJ2000's and a mixer that looked like it was conceived in outer space.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Mr Fingers – Washing Machine

What's your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Too hard to pick one, i tend to drift in and out of listening to mixes. Koze's fader mix last year was a good one as it summed up a good cross section of the sort of music i was listening to at the time. I have listened to Daphni's 7 hour live set recording from when he played at the Bussey building in 2012 a fair bit because it is so varied and weird. I also love that live recording of Daft Punk from '97 – the rawness and energy of that set is sick!

If you could go back to back with any DJ throughout history, who would it be and why

Jeff Mills in the late 80's. Recently there was footage put online of him playing in '88 complete with scratching and drop mixing. It would have been fascinating to go that far back and trade tracks with him.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first set up was two turntables and a DJM400 mixer that told you the BPM of each track which was helpful when i was learning, i still remember pulling off my first blend and feeling like i had just split the atom. Now it is 2 CDJ2000's, one turntable and a DJM800 mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

It depends when you're playing it i think but if i had to choose probably the closing track as it can bring everyone together one last time particularly if it is the last song of the night.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first was by some guy called Toni Cannelloni, it makes me cringe to think about what it sounded like and the most recent was Fleetwood Mac – Rumours.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Duck pancakes.

If it was an animal what would it be?

The honey badger because it doesn't give a shit.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything

It was that Mr Fingers record I mentioned earlier but I did an edit to get around that issue.

Upcoming in the world of Light Year
