Standard Model – The Maiden Voyage Ransom Note Mix

Music

Though the name Standard Model may be gracing your ears for the first time, you may well already be acquainted with the sounds of Andrei Idu under his The Legendary 1979 Orchestra pseudonym. This new persona sees Idu explore sound in relation with developments in particle and astro-physics. It's a doddle to understand, honest. With the release of Standard Model's Maiden Voyage EP set to cast off from shore very soon indeed as the flagship release on Legendary Sound Research, we asked Mr Model to piece togather a Maiden Voyage mix to help celebrate this momentous occasion and immediately berated him with legions of questions to keep him busy on his journey.

It's time to set sail, all aboard;

You’re pretty new on our radar, fancy telling us a little bit about yourself?

I am the house re-incarnation of disco’s Legendary 1979 Orchestra. 2010 was 1979, so it’s 1984 right now!

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

The Standard Model of particle physics. On our scale of spacetime, I am in the Netherlands. A particle acting as a wave.

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? How long would it be before you eat them?

Arnold Schwarzenegger, immediately!

Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?

Inline skating around the city.

If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? Why?

At the big bang, to watch the birth of our universe!

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?

Armand Van Helden – The Funk Phenomena. It made me feel cool! Like put some sunglasses on and have a drink cool!

How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren’t?

I think it works the same in both cases. Based on experiences one builds up a collection of patterns within the brain. And when faced with a task it is just a matter of using tools under the filter of the patterns that the brain knows. I’ve been listening to all this great funky soulful emotional and raw music ever since I can remember, when I make music I use whatever tools (instruments) I have and filter them through the patterns that my brain now knows as being funky soulful emotional and raw.

How would you introduce yourself to a member of the royal family?

Model. Standard Model. What’s poppin’?

Describe your sound without using the letter 'e'.

Lo-fi sci-fi jazz-funk.

What is the sound of silence?

By chance I just ran across an article about the most silent room ever built. The walls absorb 99% of all sound in it, staying inside for long periods of time can drive you mad! Anyway, I’d reckon most people’s definition of silence is some sort of hiss, maybe even wind against a tree’s leaves or waves braking. To me it might be the sound of that voice that’s in my head when I think, is it my personality?

When did music last make you shed a tear?

When I heard Morricone’s “Metti Una Sera A Cena” live, performed with a huge orchestra.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my living-room/studio space.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

While walking through the city.

What should we be wearing?

Baggy pants and a Wu-Wear leather jacket.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

5 AM in the same living-room with the windows open and the house full of happy dancing people.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

It’s a tie between Thorsteinsson’s and Magnesii’s tracks

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Roger Sanchez – Choice: A Collection Of Classics on Azuli has got to be the most played mix in my Honda. As the title states, it is a classic choice of great music!

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Tee Scott, just to say thank you for all those wonderful (re-)mixes he did!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It’s the same as it ever was, except now I keep my tables in the mix position, not the hip-hop battle one.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Neither. This one is about the journey!

What were the first and last records you bought?

A James Brown LP was the first and I got the Deep Burnt re-issue a few days ago.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Mango mousse.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A jaguar.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Cloud One’s 'Disco Juice'’s chorus signature of 7/8 threw me off the last time I played it.

Upcoming in the world of Standard Model?

More old used gear that I’ll eventually use to re-create lo-fi sceneries and moments from my youth intertwined with my imagination.

Anything else we need to discuss?

I hope everyone is as excited as I am about the Philae lander waking up on comet 67P! Can’t wait to learn more about our universe!
