Wonky sounds from an innovative producer.

London via Devon producer Sangre Voss doesn’t play by the rules. Over the years he has released music which challenges and tests the most ardent of experimental DJ’s with playful percussion, off piste tempos and weird, wonderful sounds which sounds as bonkers as they do beautiful. Releases and features on the likes of Rhythm Section, Fabric Records and Third Place have demonstrated a progression in sound yet emphasise the importance of staying true to the essence of fun.

His latest record was released on the 1st of March via Will Hofbauer’s Third Place label and emphasises the versatility of a producer hard to pigeonhole.

With that in mind we had no idea what to necessarily expect from this mix, it could be anything to anyone or anywhere depending on the given mood of Sangre Voss.

That’s all part of the fun.

Enter the wobbly world of a producer and DJ on top form.

Listen below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Hello I’m Sangre Voss, I’m in SE London right now but Devon I am from and I’m a fan of a little bit too much all at once.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

Sub terra in my basement because I’m a little mole

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

One of those touring fairgrounds where they charge you too much and there’s a lingering chance that some critical component of the ride has rusted through

What should we be wearing?

Animal onesie, maybe a lobster

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

In front of a ball pit with people dancing on the sides who jump in when the music hits right, that means I can also easily transition to ambient once everyone is buried and can’t dance any more. The DJ equipment should be made of that softplay material so kind of impractical and with lots of primary colours. The subs would be integrated into the pit so all the balls start vibrating in different harmonics like they do with the sand on those vibrating plates. Lighting would have to start off too cold and bright but then maybe switch to UV at some point.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Awkward because they’re all my productions/collabs 🤭so I guess it’s going to have to be the final (unreleased) one by ME called next pls which is the kind of pop folk dance that I want to be making much more of.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

The David Holmes Essential Mix argh it has everything

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Erm probably a 90’s Fatboy Slim. I think 13 y/o Sangre V bought every single production/edit he ever made – he obviously had the sampley pop dance production down. I think if I had been born a few decades earlier I would have been making Big Beat for sure. Judging by videos he’s always channeled pure party dad energy on stage and I’d like to get in on that.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

XDJ-700s which add some nice chaos every time the sliders move around by themselves when I’m on WIDE. Started with a hand-me-down 2-channel Pioneer mixer from Will Hofbauer which had a warm digital crackle to it mmm, now I have a Xone:PX5 which has lovely FX but I’m really not sure how to use them. One SanDisk Ultra 64 GB USB Flash Drive USB 3.0 Up to 130 MB/s Read, Black.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

One of these days I’m going to make an ♾️ infinite looping mix ♾️ that starts and ends on the same track and then there will be no start or end so we won’t have to decide

What were the first and last records you bought?

First might have been Mala in Cuba, not really buying much vinyl these days but my discogs says the last one was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cuts – Hot Pa Tutti 🥜

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

An ambitious blancmange – no structure and too many competing flavours

If it was an animal what would it be?

One of those tiny dogs with annoying personalities

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I always try to play 4lung but it never goes well 🙁I struggle with b2b etiquette so most of the time I’ll just leave it to the other DJ to sort out

Amaryllis – 150 by 4lung

Upcoming in the world of…

Been doing this whirm thing with Will Hofbauer – so many more whirms this year

Anything else we need to discuss?

globigerinid ooze
