Sam Watson Of Freerotation: Wednesday Alternative Mix

Music

Freerotation is an intimate party held annually near Hay On Wye. However, we are sure that you knew that already. The event's reputation is substantial. Each year they book DJ's and Artists of an extremely high caliber and do so with no sponsorship or advertising. Oh, and you have to be invited by a member of Freerotation to attend. It's all very secretive, underground and frankly, damn cool. Sam Watson is a resident at Freerotation and this mix sees him deliver a pounding two hours of fast paced techno. Strap in. Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself. Who are you? Where are you? What are you?

Sam Watson. Machynlleth. Snowdonia. Mid Wales. Dj, Producer, Freerotation Resident. Wind turbine Technician. Mountain Bike Trail Builder and Guide.

Where was the mix recorded?

Audiofarm Festival. Hendre Hall. September 2015.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Either somewhere comfortable to close the eyes and get immersed in the mix with some quality monitors, or on a dancefloor with like-minded techno heads on a nice clean sound-system with minimal lighting.

What should we be wearing?

Its all about the music. The best nights for techno are where nobody cares about what they are wearing.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location, system, format?

My home setup on a sunny day with the view of Snowdonia from my window. Event 20/20 Bas V3 monitors recorded on a digital device to wav.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Dax J. Temple Of Messiah. Ear To Ground.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Dave Clarke Essential Mix. I forget the year but mid 90s.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Dave Angel. His style of mixing and influence he had on me through the 90s shaped where I am today.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Two Technics and a Citronic mixer. Now its three Technics, an Ecler mixer and a CDJ .

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Definitely the end track.

What were the first and last records you bought?

My first record was Adam And The Ants when I was 5. Recently it was a Various Artists EP on Polegroup. Namely Shepards Tone by Inigo Kennedy. Also the new Sigha on James Ruskin's legendary label Blueprint.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A Thai curry.

If it were an animal what would it be?

A red kite.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I seem to have a knack of making records work together although they may not initially seem like they will.
