Richard Norris – The Ransom Note Mix

We like Richard Norris a fair ole bit at R$N Towers. We chatted to him in depth a few weeks back. You can read that here. 

Perhaps best known for his time in The Grid, alongside David Ball of Soft Cell fame as well as his superb Beyond The Wizards Sleeve project with Erol Alkan, Richard is an innovator and a experimenter who has plenty of strings to his bow. Where was the mix recorded? 

At my studio in Stoke Newington

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

3am in a basement

What should we be wearing 

Very little

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format. 

In a field with a mighty PA, probably using CDJs but maybe decks and a tape recorder too. 

Which track in the mix is your current favourite? 

Most of them! My track Let's Dance is a favourite as it's unreleased

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?  

Caught By The River 'Nature Disco'

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why? 

Probably Jellybean at the Funhouse NY. I like that latino freestyle thing

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now? 

It was two technics, cheap mixer, speakers bought from a bloke outside a garage. Now it's decks/CDJs/Mackie speakers

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on? 

The track you start on, as that's guiding everywhere you go from there

What were the first and last records you bought? 

First was i think one of those Top Of The Pops 70's comps, last was a 7" by Grimm Grimm, who was playing at the gig I DJ'ed at last night and is on my friend Charlotte's label

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Heaven

If it was an animal what would it be?

A big hairy one

We are currently remixing Interpol. And The Grid are finishing mixing our album with Robert Fripp.
