Poly Chain: The ‘Monday Is OK’ Mix

Kyiv-based Sasha Zakrevska AKA Poly Chain's debut album Music For Candy Shops was a total breath of fresh air. Released via Zambon's Transtalantyk imprint in 2017, the collection of sweet and syrupy tracks introduced us to her aptitude at playing with texture and melody.

She followed up her debut with a string of EPs last year including two cassette releases on Mondoj and BAS.Kolektyw, as well as a collaborative LP with Polish producer and Growing Bin regular Bartosz Kruczynski.

For today's Monday Is OK mix, she layers warm synths and abstract electronics to help you re-enter the new week on the right footing…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you, what are you?

Hello, I am Sasha from Kyiv, Ukraine.

Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.

This mix is much more chill than my last ones. Maybe because I need to chill myself out

If it were to be drawn what would it look like?

Wassily Kandinsky “Composition II”

If it were a food what would it be?

Polenta, with mozzarella and dried tomatoes

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

When you come home after a party but you do not really want to sleep yet. You make yourself a bubble bath to chill after dancing all night.

What should we be wearing?

Better nothing

Where was it recorded?

Library of Bauhaus Uni

Are you on the same wavelength as the boomtown rats or do you actually like Mondays?

I like Mondays. It's my day off as a DJ

What were your original aspirations as musicians and how do you think you're shaping up?

Not much yet

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?

I remember Aphex Ywin’s 'Windowlicker' was always in MTV but before that it was Kraftwerk's albums on vinyl from my aunt’s collection

How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren’t?

It depends, sometimes I can make a track in few hours, sometimes it's a few weeks of coming back and sharpening it. When I cant write I am suffering

What were the first and last records you bought?

First I honestly don’t remember because I got tapes and CDs as a kid for Bday and New Years (it's common to give gifts for NY then on Christmas). The last one was CYAN85 – Bay of Sampieri

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Salty Caramel sweets

If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? Why?

To my last party and play it different.

Some self help questions for a Monday…

Am I excited to dive into the challenges that I have lined up for the week?

If there is lots of traveling then yes definitely

Am I looking forward to engaging with the people I am meeting or working with?

Right now I am working only with myself, and yes I still like to see this person everyday

Am I going to my dream job?

I quit my job in 2018 and it was the best decision of my life

Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?

Yes, totally!

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? How long would it be before you eat them?

I will take my bf. He has already been in deserts so probably he knows the way. If not, he will eat me first

Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?

I am a gym person since November 2019

What's your answer to everything?
