Phil South (Golf Channel) – Ransom Note ‘Mr Ranks I Presume’ Mix

Music

Phil South has a label we quite like… it's called Golf Channel. You may have heard of it. There'll be more – a lot more – about that next…for the time being he's put us together a rather great Ransom Note 'Mr Ranks I Presume' mix. He's also the subject of our Label Love #19 here.

Let's let him tell you more. First let's get that mix on lad…

Please introduce yourself…

Who are you:

My name is Phil South

Where are you:

upstate NY

What are you:

That’s a weird question. Do you ask that when you meet people at a party?

Where was the mix recorded?

at home

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

maybe like a dinner with friends that ends up with dancing on the table

What should we be wearing

full on black tie ending up chippendales / topless

What would be your dream setting to record a mix:

/location

beach side sunset into night all the way back to dawn.
good friends from all over the world
basically a no ordinary monkey party in a spectacular setting with some chartered flights 🙂

/system

4 klipschorns, fuck it lets make that 8, proper loft system but with subs and bullets plus crazy lights and giant mirror ball cluster

despacio also sounded no bad

/format.

bozak or urei (old ones) with an active 3 way crossover, nice turntables, maybe 3 so one for the fx, 2 cdj’s, an echo machine maybe a WWII hand crank siren and a little shaka box for dub laser vibes

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

the mix is about 3-4 months old now, but the peaking lights mix of the house of spirits on beats in space is such a great tune

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I don’t listen to mixes like that so much tbh. If I really wanna get in the zone I’ll end up listening to records myself.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

back to back I don’t think I’d wanna put myself up there with the greats, that would be a little bit intimidating. The one I’d most like to’ve witnessed is Ron Hardy though for sure. Also Alfredo & Leo Mas at amnesia in 86 / 87?

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

2 technics and a really awful mixer I can’t even remember what brand. realistic or some shit.
Now its pretty nice with tannoy 15” reds, an old urei, an active LFA crossover, a sub, JBL bullets, technics turntables with rega arms and vintage shure cartridges…things sound pretty nice I have to say.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

wha'ts in the middle surely? I love that opening record thing though, reset the tone and the pace. Closing track with the house lights up and everyone holding hands obviously important though too.

What were the first and last records you bought?

first was either are friends electric by tubeway army or gangsters by the special aka
last was steve cobby “saudade"

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

something willy wonka might make that changes flavors as you get deeper in

If it was an animal what would it be?

a panther! I really don’t know. what has a day that starts out all weird and spacey then gets all techno ends up all disco? A wombat! fuck knows.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything…

I struggle with all of them hahaha

Upcoming in the world of…

oh man so much stuff. 2 Mind fair 12’s out next week followed closely by the next rhythm odyssey & dr dunks and Dan Selzer’s debut New York Endless. The Loose Control Band (DJ Spun and Jonah Sharp), Payfone, Sheila Hylton edits, Mind Fair LP, Gala Drop II (their second LP which is amazing!), Mangiami compilation, Spike remixes, more from Afrticaine 808 and Project E, Central Executives, Cherry Garcia and LGK to name a few….

Anything else we need to discuss.

Nope. We’re done here 🙂
