Pedro Vian: The Ransom Note Mix

Based in Barcelona, Pedro Vian, is the owner and founder of Modern Obscure Music, a record label and platform which allows him to accurately release his interpretation of what he believes today's electronic music should be. Releases on the label have included music from the likes of Madteo, Ital and Inga Copeland. He is also often associated with the Hivern Discs label and released several records on the label as part of his Aster project. Here is a rough and ready mix straight from the depths of the Spanish underground: listen and read the interview below:

"Being a producer with a solid career within the Barcelona scene who graduated as an Audiovisual Designer from the University of Visual Arts of Barcelona (BAU), Pedro Vian has always been fascinated with the study of existing analogies among distinct art styles. He currently finds himself working on various projects that link architecture, paintings or literature, building a dialogue with the art pieces stemming from his musical knowledge. Only two years ago he made a momentous step forward with the creation of Modern Obscure Music, a platform from which he can accurately shape his views on what today’s electronic music should be, releasing material from likeminded artists while creating his own sound, combining silky dance rhythms with an experimental approach and dark atmospheres. So far, the record label has published material and remixes of artists like Madteo, Ital, Estefania AA, Sunny Graves and Inga Copeland. Pedro Vian is the new alter ego of Pettre, who had previously published tracks through different international record labels as Hivern Discs or Mathematics Recordings, and for several years made up half of the “Aster” duo, a project with an interesting journey whose echoes still ring in its fans’ eardrums. Vian aims to release two new EP’s this year and various remixes and collaborations, including a debut album which should not take too long to arrive."

Explain the concept behind Modern Obscure Music, how did the label come to be?

The main idea to create Modern Obscure Music is to unify all my projectes in one, to release my own productions and ralease music from artists I admire and have a common vision of electronic music.

Where was the mix recorded?

I have recorded this mix in my studio with some 12" I recently bought and some wav files… I recorded this really fast, I haven't premeditated anything.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

The ideal setting would be a party maybe. I usually don't listen this music at home, but I tried to record this mix thinking in a dance floor. Anyway it's pretty cerebral.

What should we be wearing?

Maybe some sneakers with a good rubber sole, lol.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I like all the tracks of this mix, but my current favorite is the first one. Mango Sheen by Ivy Barkakti is released today on MOM is the first track of Ritual Rhythms Compilation, really trippy. Anyway, Marcelus Pittman track is amazing too.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

My favorite Dj actually is Marc Piñol and I like all his sets, I can't pick only one. But I feel the same with James Holden.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I had the oporunity to play back to back with one of my favorite dj's, John Talabot. But… I'll love to play with Holden or Kode 9, why not?

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Every track on the mix have the same importance, each has its role.

What were the first and last records you bought?

When I was really young I stared to buy some techno records combining with some presents from my borther. I remember the first albums that my brother gave me were from Kraftwerk, he bought it at a flea market in Italy. I remember I was very shocked to hear for the first time. On the other hand the last record I bought is "I can't give you the life you want" a Various Artists from Blackest Ever Black and "Six Marimbas" from Steve Reich.

If this mix were an edible thing, what would it taste like?

The taste of this mix is something intense, some times bitter and some times exotic.

If it were an animal what would it be?

Maybe will be a panther…

Upcoming in the world of…

My first LP will be out on October.
