Paddy Mulcahy: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix

Music

Paddy Mulcahy is an Irish composer whose latest EP From Water was released last month on Phases Records. The follow-up to his album The Words She Said, it finds Mulcahy exploring more of an electronic avenue, and is bound to appeal to fans of Nils Frahm and Four Tet.

For his Monday Mix, Paddy has put together this brilliant patchwork of demos, edits and original material. The perfect way to ease into your afternoon. Listen below:

Please introduce yourself… who/where/what are you?

My name is Paddy Mulcahy. I am an ambient electronic and piano composer from Limerick City in Ireland. I’ve just returned from Montreal, after living there for one year.

What does your music sound like?

I think my music sounds quite unique. There are strange ideas in there, and lots of similar sounding instruments. It’s both upbeat and melancholic, with brief pauses to allow you to analyze how the music made you feel.

Do you like Mondays?

I quite like Mondays! I look at it as a fresh start by setting weekly goals for myself in the studio. For some reason, the coffee tastes better too!

Where was the mix recorded?

I recorded this mix in my basement studio in Limerick City. I’ve stitched it together using some WIP demos, special edits and some new/older recordings! You’ll hear lots of improv sketches from my custom modular synthesiser and also some arranged pieces.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Maybe it’s good night-driving music. Maybe breakfast on a balcony, maybe on a beach sitting alone. Please let me know!

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

The last track, 'Clicktracks On Mars'; taken from my album The Words She Said. I recorded it on a Juno 60 synthesiser and it is definitely my favourite patch.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I’m not sure about my ultimate favourite, but I am loving some of Rodhad, Phase & Nina Kraviz’s mixes right now.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Both are equally important to give the mix a proper context. I do love a strong opener, but a nice finisher is always much appreciated.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First: Art Tatum – His Rarest Solos

Last: Tangerine Dream – Phaedra

Upcoming in the world of Paddy Mulcahy?

I’m starting to work on my next album at the moment! Having lots of fun trying out lots of ideas and working on tracklists. The demos are piling up 😉
