mi-el: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix
A mi-el set is gripping in every sense of the word.
The London-born DJ has forged her own tempo-shifting, cross-genre approach to mixing, since first cutting her teeth in Leeds and Leipzig, through shows on Sable Radio and at spaces like Institut fuer Zukunft.
After making her return home to London she’s cemented herself as an artist and DJ with a fierce eye and ear. As co-booker and designer for Bermondsey’s Venue MOT, she’s helped to build a visual and musical aesthetic that’s pretty much unrivalled in South East London.
It’s in this space that she’s continued to hone her skills as a DJ, as well as through her work at livestream and party series Late Night Shopper, alongside founder and regular B2B partner Allecto.
No surprises, Melissa’s mix for us is enthralling from the get-go. Launching with cinematic, experimental and choral soundscapes, she sets the scene for a fusion of crunchy, metallic beats, guitar-soaked electronics, galloping rhythms and stripped-back breaks…
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you
mi-el! I’m an artist, DJ and a part of the venue mot family – born and bred in london < 3
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds likefor us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
I’d say it sounds like all the different bits of my personality got together and held a meeting to try and work out exactly who is steering this ship
Where was the mix recorded?
Venue mot unit 18, orion business centre, surrey canal road, london se14 5rt
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
She’s a versatile queen, take her everywhere
What should we be wearing?
Absolutely nothing always
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Probably some kind of glass-roofed cathedral in a forest or up in some mountains
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Mm it’s between ‘battle theme’ ‘sucio y duro’ and the final track ‘ramblin man’ – just all beautifully dark and emotionally intense in their own way
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
So I learnt to play on a friend’s 1210’s years ago but otherwise I haven’t yet been afforded the privilege of acquiring a set up of my own, have always been a serial practice room user
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
It’s all about the journey
What were the first and last records you bought?
First actual vinyl was I think Lucky Star by Madonna
Last one I bought was ‘Na Zala Zala’ on Nyege Nyege Tapes
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
If it was an animal what would it be?
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Nothing is impossible
