Magnus International: The Ransom Note Mix

Music

Magnus International is a Norwegian producer who is at the forefront of the new wave. Full Pupp have long since been doing their own thing, pushing the boundaries of sonics and modern day club music. It was on Prins Thomas' label that he chose to release his debut LP following a stream of singular EP's. His sound dabbles in the warm textures and sits somewhere between the realms of house and disco. This mix is an exploration into his musical inspirations and a showcase of what you might hear him playing in the club at present. Listen and read the interview below…

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Im Magnus International, producer and DJ from Oslo.

What does your music sound like?

It sounds like disco meets house i guess….

So the album has just landed on Full Pupp, has it been a long time coming?

Ah yeah, it took ages to make. Im just not that quick when making music.

How did you begin to form a relationship with the Full Pupp label?

I have know Thomas for many a moon so it was just comon sense to join the Full Pupp team.

You are based in Oslo right, in five words how would you describe the city's music scene?

Vibrant, fun, cold, ecentric and did i mention that its REALLY cold. Like we live in the arctic cold.

The record is titled ‘Echo To Echo’. How did that title come about?

It's a homage to the great Galaxy to Galaxy tradition in techno to spell the name twice. Echo is stolen form Arthur Russell's seminal World of Echo. So I went full on "old school Techno" I think.

Where was the mix recorded?

At home and at a club called Dattera to hagen in Oslo.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Doing the dishes.

What should we be wearing?

The sexiest dishwashing clothes you got.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location, system, format?

Ruff question… how at blå Blaaoslo.no,  the monthly full pupp evening that I'm a resident at.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Dj Harvey's sarcastic disco mix or any mix made by the seminal Øyvind Morken.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I would love to go back to the Record box and listen to Ron Hardy play Acid trax for the first time. I met Dj Rolando and he told me the myth was true. He played that fucker four times in a row. To be there and witness that would be so cool.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first dj set up was with an old numark mixer and two belt driven record players with pitch. These days i got all that junk up in my studio…

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

I always feel that the last track is the most important. A good last impression is what people remember I think.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was Public Enemy: "It takes a nation of millions to hold us back". The last was an edit by Prins Thomas called Kitty kitty, got it cheap in Oslo so now I got two of it.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A banana sunday smooth and with a great texture.

If it were an animal what would it be?

A cockatoo those birds are so fun.
