Lis Sarroca: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

Lis Sarroca‘s sound bridges the past and the present.

Both future-facing and old school, you’ll find the Barcelona-based artist crafting music that’s brimming with soul and groove.

She draws from the expansive realms of house music, touching on the deep, the soulful and the acidic, whilst sometimes dipping her toe into Balearic and Italo.

As is for many, music has always been a means for Lis to confidently express herself, which she’s done so on releases for acclaimed labels like Hot Haus Recs, Mobilee Records, Shall Not Fade, Chiwax and !K7. Set on having a platform for her own music, and for artists and friends of a similar musical mindset, she launched her own label venture last year, Maai Records, which has housed two records of her own and two VA releases, the newest of which will drop on 18th November.

These achievements haven’t come without graft – as a DJ she’s been in the game for over 15 years, picking up her first pair of CD players back in 2007. Her DJing is entwined with her love of travelling, be it digging out dusty gems in undiscovered places or making new connections with like-minded artists – she takes inspiration from every experience and feeds it back into her own music.

After being introduced to Lis at our Barbarella’s takeover earlier this year we knew she had to partake in our mix series. So here it is, a club-ready collection of pumping and energetic house (in the loosest sense) to get you primed and ready for the weekend… Thursday is the new Friday after all.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

My name is Lis, I am a dj, a digger, producer, and label owner of Maai Records. Currently living in Barcelona. I am that person that can easily express my personality and feelings through the music.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

I think it is a combination between different styles, some old school vibes mixed with new sounds and new trends. Also can be described as energetic and warm.

Where was the mix recorded?

At my studio

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Most probably at a party

Comfortable shoes 😊

Back in 2007, the first CD players I bought were the pioneer CDJ400, Mixer Denon DJ DNX120 2 Channel Mixer

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track I start with is important for me, it has to catch the audience but in a smooth way. The track I finish with most of the time has to have big emotion, which I think has to be the most important

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was Thomas Brinkmann – Axel / Bernd. The last one was Drua – Leisureplex.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A spicy michelada 😊

A cat

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I found this one very difficult: Bloom (pt.1) – from EP 1 by RX-101

Anything else we need to discuss?

Thanks for having me and hope we can meet again soon!
