Haddon – Shine A Light On… Ransom Note Un-Mixed Mix (Mixtape)

Music

We've once more decided to take the spotlight that guards the drawbridge to R$N Towers and spin it around onto some talented young buck who has a knack for putting together some sounds in a rather impressive manner. This week the wheeled blinder of Shoreditch (patent pending) is firmly rooted on talented youngster Haddon, whose rather fine album Auricular Palimpsest we've been streaming since last week.

He provides us with an un-mixed mix (mixtape to the older amongst us) and we provide him with the questions. Away we go…

Who are you?

My friends call me: Mix La, Man, Pal or Dude but never Michael.

Where are you?

Chilling in bed in my basement flat.

What are you?

Not an Englishman but a person from Earth who lives in England.

What was the first electronic music track you heard? How did it make you feel?

Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill. The weird synth thing was mystifying.

Your album was made in a basement flat in Headingley – are you keen for it to have that lucrative 'underground' vibe or would you rather people judge it purely on musical content?

I moved into this flat specifically so I could make authentic underground music.

What are you hoping to achieve with you music?

Some sort of confusion followed by "…ok I kinda get it".

What's the music scene like in Leeds at the moment? Is there anyone (besides yourself) that we should be keeping an eye on?

Which ‘Mr Men’ is your favourite?

I can empathise with Mr. Worry.

Have you ever ridden an animal that isn't a horse? Donkeys don't count, they're too horsey.

I'm a short guy but when I was even littler I rode my friends great dane in the school playground.

Can you lick your nose with your tongue? No using your fingers to help.

Afraid not, sorry.

Now, onto the mix…

Where was the mix recorded?

In my bedroom back home in Chester-le-Street.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Alone with candles and shit.

What should we be wearing?

A dressing gown or whatever's most comfortable.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

With a generator in Dartmoor Forest on CDJs with no one else around (maybe a couple of friends).

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Co La – Chez Panisse

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Torn between Holden's At The Controls and Kassem Mosse's Boiler Room.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

The obvious answer is John Peel but I'd probably go for Weatherall for the parties (even though I don't really like parties).

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Virtual DJ 4 lyf.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Neither it's the journey that counts.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First – Daft Punk – One More Time on tape // Last –  Clifford Brown & Max Roach – Raw Genius.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Salmon sushi with chili, soy sauce, wasabi, lemon sherbet and sasaparilla.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A human.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.

Upcoming in the world of Haddon?

Stress, excitement and other emotions.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Dreams, authors, movies and conspiracy theories but we'll save that for another time eh?

Haddon's LP is out now. Buy it on Bandcamp for 5 English pounds. Own it on a very limited CD for 7. That is all.
