Gohan: The Wednesday Alternative Mix

Music

Moody and dark are terms which seem to come in tangent with the work of up and coming producer Gohan. Following the release of his debut album "Peur" which came out on Peur Bleue Records in 2012, his own imprint by the way, he has since released music by the likes of Nummer, Nick Araguay and Altkat. Melancholic and immersive, the theme of black runs prevalently throughout the ethos of the label. We caught up with him to talk about his label and the Gohan project. Listen to his mix and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Gohan, hitmaker and owner of Peur Bleue Records, based in Peckham, South East London.

What does your music sound like?

Movie soundtracks.

How did you first become involved in music?

Thru the real originator Juan Sebastian Bach! Been learning piano from an early age.

How funky are you, on a scale of 1 to 10?

I live for the bounce man, 10!

All of your tracks and aliases seem to be based on made up people, situations and narratives. How important is the story to you as part of your creative process?

It is a big part of my process. I always try to tell a story or just imagine a story when I make a track. I’ve been widely fascinated by albums or EPs with a narrative, this is what I am trying to do with my stuff as well as the other producers’ projects I release on record label.

Where was the mix recorded?

In Paris at my parents place.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Don’t take drugs, don’t get drunk, just elevate your soul…

What should we be wearing?

Tuxedos always make the difference but it’s up to you, really.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location, system, format?

I’d love to record a mix on top of the Horniman Museum on a late Sunday afternoon, facing North. That sounds a bit naff when I say it though…

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Benoit B – Tropico Timelexia (forthcoming on Peur Bleue Records!)

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I have been listening James Holden’s At The Controls a lot!

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Don’t know DJ history that well to be frank. Young Jeff Mills maybe, looks like the man had (still has) skills.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Vestax CD decks… Living the future now man, just a pair of 1210 MK2!

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

I do have a guilty pleasure for boxing and wedding entrance tracks.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix) I think.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Sis kebab.

If it were an animal what would it be?

Seen that megamouth shark before?

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Joe Europe’s are impossible! 

Upcoming in the world of…

Benoit B EP on Peur Bleue Records with release party at Rye Wax with Brian Not Brian, Nick Araguay and the man of the moment, Benoit B, on September 10th. Be there!

Anything else we need to discuss?

Yeah real things like Pogba at Man U or Nigel’s moustache?!
