Ears Have Eyes: The Wednesday Alternative Mix

Music

For a long time now we have been championing the music of Ears Have Eyes, an imprint with a firm affiliation with Ransom Note and managed by two all round lovely gentlemen. Run by Murun B and Ivor E, the imprint has released a steady stream on interesting electronics with the likes of Snapped Ankles, Losian, FYI Chris, Chocky and Tilman all having appeared since 2012. They also have a regular show on Balamii Radio which showcases local talent and a well crafted, intricate taste in music which the pair have become associated with.

The pair have recently collaborated on a new EP for the imprint, a lovely assortment of elegant deep house and technical wizardry.

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

We are Murun B and Ivor E, proprietors of Ears Have Eyes Records. We’re in South London, and we are a pair of men.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Our music sounds like two friends, who have nothing better to do, and nothing else to offer. For our Murun B & Ivor E project we focus on writing slightly weird, but heartfelt club music that draws influences from the hazy, half remembered cartoons from our youth.

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded round Murun’s gaff in one take with a nice bottle of vino.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

On a train, cruising through the welsh valleys. Or at home, underneath your kitchen sink.

What should we be wearing?

Train driver’s overalls, or just a neat hairdo and some natty shoes.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Out and about, at a dirty little club. With some turntables (that work) and a friendly, enthusiastic crowd. The simple things in life are the best.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I think the track we end on, which is “Could I Pulverize a Leg” by Duckett. He’s such a great talent, and this track is wonderfully intense.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Murun – Coldcut 70 Minutes of Madness Journeys by DJs mix.
Ivor – Derrick May’s Mayday mix from 97

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

We’d be scared to go back in time and go back to back with one of our idols. Either we’d fuck it up or they’d be a letdown. So probably some cool DJ from the future with a sci-fi hairdo and amazing music no one’s heard yet.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Murun: A pair of awful Gemini turntables when I was young.

Ivor: Soundlab DLP – absolute classics.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you end on. Which, when we play out, tends to be something by Talking Heads. In this case it’s the aforementioned Duckett track which wraps things up nicely.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Murun: Last one was Telematic by DAN FUN on Borft. First one, lordy I can’t remember. I can’t remember the first vinyl I bought but I definitely remember buying BAD by Michael Jackson on cassette when I was little.

Ivor: First one was Ice T – Rhyme Pays. Last one was Clavilux by Basteroid.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Your childhood

If it was an animal what would it be?

Your dead first pet

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Murun: It’s not something that it’s impossible to mix but I always pack Reel by Real by Surkit when I play out and have never found the right time to play it. When I drop that it has to be perfect and I’ve never felt the moment has been right.

Upcoming in the world of…

We’ve just released our debut EP on our very own Ears Have Eyes. The Murun and Ivor EP. And we have a various artists release coming up with Elles & Violet, Chocky, Replete and Contours which is sounding FLIPPING ACE.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Nope. I think you’ve had just about enough of us for now anyway!
