Body Motion – The ‘Friday Is For Freaks’ Ransom Note Mix

Music

The sweet abandonment (or at least postponement) of responsibility can bring out the freak in everyone. South London roaming party Body Motion have stirred up a selection of sounds which hopefully knocks any responsible thoughts miles away. They're in New Cross tonight (Friday 23rd October) with the golden boy of Phantasy's latest discovery, Nathan from Cowboy Rhythmbox, alongside local heros Slow Bounce and Good Genes. Ahead of the party they've given us a big ol' mix and we've asked them some questions. Go on then, dive in;

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Body Motion, South London mainly, the best party you’re too lazy to go to.

What on earth is Body Motion then?

Unstoppable movement, starting in the feet, resulting in euphoric shakes and sweats.

How did it all come about? How has it changed since the start?

We started this party about a year ago at Rye Wax. We’ve since spread ourselves around Peckham, New Cross and Deptford like some gross bacteria, infecting locals and drumming up an army of hardy dance affiliates. We decided with this party we were going to play exactly what we wanted, no matter how discordant and west.

What's the sort of music you love most?

Leftfield polyrhythms, early synthesis, programmed drums, bad vocals lost in reverb. Anything they made in Belgium in the late 80s.

What was the first electronic record you ever heard? How did it make you feel?

Claude Larsen – Plantlife. It made us feel sick.

What is your greatest regret?

That we’ve gone too far in to this to stop and do anything else.

How do you relax?

We don’t know what that is.

What’s the worst thing about making music?

Buying the MPC from Romford.

What’s your motto?

Always be moving your body.

How would you describe the perfect Body?

Have you ever met Franco Harris?

What's your favourite motion?

E….motion.

Motions or emotions?

Hold on, I don’t think this is a real question and I don’t feel like we’re being taken seriously. (I've never taken anyone seriously in my life – Ed.)

Do you like diggers?

Josh once went in a digger, he says it scared him but he was 5 years old at the time.

How many bites does it take you to eat an apple?

Trick question.

Onto the mix…
Where was the mix recorded?

BOMO conservatoire of sound.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In a squat in Belgium in 1989.

What should we be wearing?

Anything but a hat.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Somewhere high end.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

UnknownmiX – Chew The Gun (Red Axes edit)

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

IF – Mixed Up In The Hague

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Boris Blank, but instead of DJing we’d just sit in his studio and listen to all his samples. And instead of back to back he’d just play us all his samples.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Traktor – 2 Technics 1210s & a Xone 23 mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The one you start on because I lose focus. The last track the next guy might cut half way through anyway.

What were the first and last records you bought?

I remember my dad gave me this Deep Purple & the London Philharmonic record when I was a kid… The most recent is probably Hmm hmm by Taste of Sugar.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Sweet and sour porridge.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A saltwater crocodile eating a great white shark (it happens).

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

DJ Deeon – Yo Mouf (we like this record but its way faster than most of our other records).

Upcoming in the world of Body Motion?

We’ve got our party tonight (October 23rd) with Nathan from Cowboy Rhythmbox and our buddies Slow Bounce and Good Genes, then tomorrow we’re playing in Bermondsey at a night called Leisure Time which is runby the Yurovision guys. We’re playing on Radar Radio next week.

Anything else we need to discuss?

So… do you pay us now or….?
