Call it what you want – Boogie, Modern Soul, Rare groove, Electrofunk, shit – even post disco if you're looking to get all academic about it. Whatever the name, the funk and soul coming out of the US (and to a lesser extent Europe and the UK) in the late 70s and early 80s was some of the finest and most influential music ever made.
The music, which layed the foundations for hip hop, rnb, house and techno – was created under a perfect storm of ultra high musicianship and all kinds of exciting new technological advances: Jazz men playing prophet synthesizers, soul singers over DMX drum machines, percusionists on syndrums – the producions were space age, the outfits were noisy and the music was tight.
Ghettospheric have been educating the people of Bristol in this golden era of music for years, basing their nights around the sound but also taking in more classic soul, with the occasional slow jam and lovers record thrown in for good measure, and making a home for themselves at the infamous Mackies and Cosies while developing a reputation as having some of the most in depth record collections in town.
Made up of core members Matt Doggs, Niami NIce, Tina T and Charlie Malibu, the ghettospheric massive have now upped sticks and swooped into the big smoke ready to take over the nations capital. Their innaugral London party is taking place at Visions Video in Dalston and will feature NTS radio's very own host with the most Charlie Bones as well as a couple of very special secret guests coming down from Bristol.
To celebrate their London launch, Matt Doggs has put together a dream of a mix for your listening pleasure, which captures the many styles of Ghettospheirc, from up-tempo synth boogie
and disco to two step soul and classic slow jams, all on wax and exclusive to R$N.
