8 (10!) Tracks – Gardland

Art & Culture

Gardland, production duo and label heads of Hunter Gatherer, pedal all analog live improvised techno. We caught up with pair from Sydney to find out where they pulled their influences from to build their unique sound. CHECK ALL VIDEOS IN THIS SERIES TO FLICK THROUGH ALL THEIR MIGHTY FINE CHOICES.

Gareth Psaltis - Static Release (hunter Gatherer)

These first three are all Sydney homies pedalling live improvised hard jam damage. They’re the people creating in our personal context so their work pushes us harder than anything else. Gareth’s stuff seems quite brutal on first inspection but there’s a real emotional intensity below the surface. Cassius Select has a more sample based approach – the cut is a few months old, his newer stuff kinda sounds like Dilla vs. UK Bass vs. Marcel Dettmann. Nander makes big gassy billowing 7am tracks – he’s living Berlin now and has the techno bug big time.

  • Kareem Moser - Os2009 (ominira)

The synth lead in this is so well done, has a real breathy quality that triggers a real strong reaction, some empty nostalgic vibes… yet the swing and dynamics keep things light and open.

  • Ital - Ice Drift [stalker Mix] (workshop)

This track is proper wiggy ish, so many dueling elements – could so easily be a total mess yet everything tessellates beautiful, would love to hear this on a big system. That pitch bending can induce nausea.

  • Morphosis - Dismantle (honest Jons)

What Morphosis does with an MS20 and 808 is unbelievable. This track is constantly unraveling yet maintains a kinda nerve burning stasis. Really liked his album from a couple years back and his curation of the Morphine label is great. Saw him at Labyrinth in 2011 with a small fortune’s worth of gear pretty much just noodling and pulling out some mind altering shiz. Crazy that he can get music that feels properly new out of highly codified sounds.

  • Vakula - Exp Techno (firecracker Recordings)

If we had to pick just one favourite DJ it’d probably be Vakula… and if we had to pick one favourite producer he’d certainly be in contention too. The guy is just a freak. His set at the recent Dekmantel night at Panorama Bar was a 10/10 and we’ve seen him teach Sydney a dancefloor lesson a couple times. The collection that ‘Exp Techno’ comes from is one of the year’s best, could’ve chosen any of the tracks from it.

  • Voiceless - Tru Dat (iii Rivers Records)

A jam from Manchester. We’re real suckers for that sad-eyed-machine-junk-funk stuff. A little LFO on da pads, some overdriven bass n some tape feedback ‘n we in hevan!

  • Joey Anderson - Above The Cherry Moon (avenue66)

    100% wiggin’.

  • Joey Beltram - The Start It Up (trax)

Perhaps one of the most furious techno tracks out there. Could’ve been released yesterday. Would cause serious damage in the right place at the right time.
