A Story Of Children And Film

Art & Culture

Mark Cousins tends to polarise audiences. There are those who can't stand the way he talks (not – to be clear – his Irish accent), with a singsong intonation, rising at the end of every sentence. He also takes an unusual approach to this subject by filming his niece and nephew as they play and interact and using that as the basis for his examination of the way children are portrayed in films. Being a cinephile, he chooses clips from at least as many films you and I have never heard of, as he does of well known movies. But then that's the point. To introduce us to stuff we don't know, to encourage us to venture off the beaten track. I enjoyed the film, and although it might not grab a huge audience of younger people, it is striking and idiosyncratic.
