Film London Jarman Award Winner To Be Announced On 8th December

Art & Culture

The late Derek Jarman's oeuvre was stylistically and thematically diverse, confidently deploying 'experimental' techniques (early satire Jubilee happily  eschewed  the three act structure and any attempt at maintaining a linear narrative) in commercial run films that  at times verged on the absurd and joyously provocative. In honour of his legacy, the Jarman Award was establish to acknowledge those auteurs working in the UK today whose work continues Jarman's  avant garde tradition of innovation and subversion.

This year’s high-profile judging panel comprises filmmaker John Maybury; Iwona Blazwick OBE, Director, Whitechapel Gallery; Channel 4’s Commissioning Editor for Arts John Hay; Steven Cairns, Associate Curator of Artists’ Film & Moving Image, ICA and Beatrice Gibson, artist and filmmaker.

The artists shortlisted for the 2014 Award are: John Akomfrah, Sebastian Buerkner, Laura Buckley, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Steven Claydon, Redmond Entwistle, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Ursula Mayer, Rachel Reupke and Stephen Sutcliffe. The announcement of this year's winner will follow a national touring programme that runs until 7 December, with screenings, exhibitions and talks taking place at arts venues and cinemas across the UK in Bristol, Cardiff, Eastbourne, Glasgow, Liverpool, Margate, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham. The tour culminates with a special weekend of screenings, live performances, artist/curator discussions and other events at London’s Whitechapel Gallery on 6th and 7th December.
