David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years Of Lgbt Music

'David Bowie Made Me Gay' is a fascinating insight into how LGBT musicians played a part in shaping modern music.

Author Darryl W. Bullock delves into the lives of those who influenced LGBT music today through interviews and contemporary reports, and narrates the journey of the LGBT community's struggle to be accepted and the music that soundtracked those hardships.

Illustrated with rare and unseen photographs, the book explores the period surrounding jazz and blues, the inter-war years, a period of time where many LGBT singers and performers were granted freedom of expression, something they wouldn't have again until the 70s and 80s. 

As well as the obvious era of disco, a scene that was openly gay, Bullock also investigates the somewhat unknown influence upon genres such as rap, reggae and dancehall. The book also takes a look at how attitudes towards the LGBT community in countries such as Russia, Jamaica and Nigeria are still being challenged.

The book will be published 7th September and will launch at The British Library with Stonewall founder Simon Fanshawe and is perfectly timed to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK.
