A long overdue contribution from the Chilean producer and DJ delivers a masterclass in acid house, bass, techno and beyond.

Valesuchi is a producer who we have kept a close eye on for a while now – the Chilean artist has released some stellar leftfield house and techno, drawing upon Latin influences and channeling a proper DIY sensibility.

We are talking rough drums, dusty pads, grungey acid and everything in between.

Based in Rio De Janeiro we felt now would be a fitting time to feature her in our series after she reached out and sent us her new album – which is as riotous and intriguing as they come. A proper journey through weird soundscapes and analogue dreams.

This mix showcases her versatility as a DJ, a proper masterclass in movement between style, genre and pace. All with a no holds barred undercurrent which keeps things very fresh and very interesting.

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself? Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m Valesuchi, I’m in my hometown Santiago de Chile, but I’ve been living in Rio de Janeiro for 8 years now. I’ve been producing electronic music, performing live and DJing since inheriting my late brother’s equipment when I was 15 years old. I’m deeply interested in sound and its implications as a time based medium, exploring technological, spiritual, and communal contexts to create and reveal new participatory meanings, within my craft.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

At F.O.M.O. headquarters in Santiago de Chile, one of the best parties I’ve ever played. Really sweet and pro people making a big difference in the scene right now.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Any that involves moving your body or transporting yourself.

What should we be wearing?

That somewhat really underrated look in the back of your closet, that you always save for when you’re “in the mood”. Get in the mood, you’re ready.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Whatever’s available, as long as I have at least4 hours to listen to the music I gathered patiently for weeks, and test the order a bit before actually pressing REC.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Impossible to choose one. I don’t play music I’m not 100% crazy for.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

One I’ve probably listened to a million times and I deeply love is the 3rd episode of “El Disco es Cultura”, by Sano and Lord Byron for Radio Cómeme. An epic class on Medellín’s nightlife and Salsa history.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Hmmmm this is tricky. Playing B2B can reveal really hidden weird stuff in people, even when you’re close to that person. There are DJs that get to the booth in a competing vibe with you, it’s very noticeable. But others come to play for you and with you, that really honour the moment together. This is my favourite kind, the ones you prepare and get excited about showing music to, like my dear friends Diegors and Badsista, which I’d go B2B again anywhere anytime.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I’ve never had a DJ set up, only 1 turntable to listen to records at home. That’s part of how special and electric it feels to DJ when I arrive at a party I play at. I’m really craving to DJ.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Both are equally important as doors of perception, forth and back.

What were the first and last records you bought?

I think the first was a tape of Garbage’s first album. The last one I bought was Awkward Attraction by Monstera Black and alys(alys)alys.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Richly textured, crunchy, with loads of spices, freshly made, delicious and new.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A monkey family.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Every track can have a special moment, it’s up to you to realize when and how.

Upcoming in the world of…

The release of “Futuro Cercano”, my 2nd album and first double vinyl, thanks to Discos Nutabe from Medellín Colombia. We’ll also throw parties in Santiago, Medellín and Bogotá to celebrate it, before traveling to Montreal to play it live at Mutek Festival.
