Make A Dance: The Ransom Note Mix

Let’s get M.A.D.
Make A Dance is a duo made up of Ben Lewis & Josh Ludlow and best believe us when we say that they have been causing quite the ruckus. Their record label come party series has become a UK powerhouse releasing some of the best club music out there with a playful sense of self and dancefloor debauchery to boot.
As a duo they mix a broad assortment of house, disco, funk and beyond – blurring the lines between genres but always managing to maintain the soul and energy of a good party. Nothing too serious, nothing too dark.
At a time when the world ain’t so happy – they channel the feel good elements of a genre which can often take itself far too seriously and we can safely say that we’re here for it.
This mix demonstrates why they are two of the most fun in the booth at the moment as they whiz through a heady assortment of House, Disco, Italo, Balearic and beyond.
Lock in and get down:
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you:
We are Make A Dance a DJ & Production duo and Record label owners. Currently sitting in Ben’s flat in Peckham.
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Where was the mix recorded?
Josh’s studio in East Sussex.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
An early scenic train journey, leaving whilst it’s still dark, culminating with an ocean bridge crossing being adorned with the first morning light.
What should we be wearing?
J: Big cashmere socks…
B: A good tracksuit – ultimate comfort and good for dancing.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Beach front cabin, ocean view, Dub Siren, 2xCDJ, 2×1210, V10, Large Speakers…..
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
B: Alone In The House – Heavy House Connection
J: Mr. Ho – Western Lake Boat Race
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
B: Jacques Lu Cont – FabricLive 09
J: Despite a lot of big nostalgic mixes, Artwork’s in the lab set from 2019 is a 1 hour masterclass. All corners covered, masterful transitions and a good bit of 909 improvisation.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
B. Daft Punk anytime between Homework and Human After All album, they were untouchable in this period for me, their music had such joy and energy in it and think it would be a really fun b2b
J: It would have to be Larry… and I’d probably just watch. So many of my favourite records were broken by him at the garage. I’d just love to experience that place, and even better to experience it without my current memories of dance music.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
B: Pair of belt drive ION turntables and mixer (Horrible), Now have: 1210’s and a pair of XDJ750s, and a Master sounds mixer
J: I still have the same, an RX, 1×1210, Studio Monitors…
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
B: track to start as I feel often dictates the vibe and direction of the set, it’s the foundation and a chance to start a new chapter in the club
J. I’d say the end, as it really dictates what you’ve managed to achieve through out.
What were the first and last records you bought?
B: The first vinyl was ‘Badmeaninggood: Roots Manuva’ (think I had dreams of being a hip hop DJ at first) and last record I picked up was ‘A Brand New Day – Deep Vibes’
J: This Is a great Q, my brain is sweating to work out what it could be. Likely a D&B 12” from HMV for £5.99
The most recent record was ‘Decius Vol. 2’ I think ‘Queen of 14th street’ is on of the best dance records ever made. It’s sublime.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Hopefully a good Jerk Chicken, with all the bits…
If it was an animal what would it be?
Mystical Goat.
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
These are our favourite records, some tunes just aren’t supposed to be mixed?
Upcoming in the world of… Anything else we need to discuss?
We are celebrating 5 years of trading as record label. Look out for a Various Artist’s compilation, more events, Panorama Bar and Glasto debuts and so much more music….
