Kiara Scuro: The Ransom Note Mix

Music

Next up is the fantastic duo Kiara Scuro. A pair of London based ladies who are taking the city by storm.

Rosie and Nadia are steadily making waves as they embark upon a musical voyage which is bound to see them travel far. The pair have exceptional taste which is perhaps best showcased via their appearances on Balamii Radio. Together they play an eclectic array of electronic music which spans a magnificently wide breadth – from new wave to post punk, electro to house, synth escapades to abstract techno and so much more. They meander between genres and styles with exceptional style and grace. These two are the real deal.

We invited them to contribute to our ever growing mix series as they deliver an assortment of music which they describe as a representation of 'dark desires'.

Listen and read the interview below:

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

We are Rosie and Nadia, two friends who like to play some tunes together, sometimes out and sometimes on our show on Peckham’s Balamii Radio.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

A dramatic collage.

Where was the mix recorded?

At our friend Chris’ studio in Hackney. An angel on earth.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Between red silk sheets.

What should we be wearing?

Nothing.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Small, dark, low lit with two CDJS, two 1210s and a gin and tonic.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Rosie: The Carlos Peron track is crazy… It was recorded in 1984 which blows my mind!

Nadia: Beyond – Silver. Big up Adam aka Newborn Jr. for bringing that one to our attention at Rosie’s night at The Waiting Room.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Too hard, it’s like trying to name your favourite track. But our favourite mix of last year was a toss up between DJ October’s Stamp The Wax mix and Eris Drew’s RA podcast.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Rosie: My stepdad, he'd give me a schooling.

Nadia: I’d love to go B2B2B with Khidja… Looking forward to warming up for them at The Waiting Room soon.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

We both started with controllers and now have 1210s.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start on because it sets the scene. If it ain’t a winner people won’t carry on listening. Millennials have short attention spans…

What were the first and last records you bought?

Rosie: I have no idea what the first record I bought was but I imagine it was some sort of greatest hits LP from The Kinks or The Small Faces – when I was in my teens I was under the impression I was a mod. The last record I bought was at L’International in Paris. It was an EP from an amazing Polish producer called Chino. His Duch EP on S1 Warsaw.

Nadia: I genuinely can’t remember my first record. My most recent record wasn’t a personal buy, but a birthday present from Rosie – Pinkman’s Five Year Anniversary EP.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Triple chocolate black forest gateaux. Something indulgent… a “guilty pleasure”.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A queen bee.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Rosie: This glitchy Kyoka record on Raster Noton. But where there’s a will, there’s a way…

Nadia: J-Zbel – Lauren Misogyn. I’ll try and slip it in one day…

Upcoming in the world of…

Corsica tonight for the last minute wanderers. Further ahead we’ve got Gottwood, Farr, Dimensions, Cosmic Roots and a few other things in the pipeline…

Anything else we need to discuss?

Rosie: Tons, but we’d be here forever.

Nadia: Rosie loves to talk.
