The Wolf: The Ransom Note Mix

Music

There's something to be said for a mix which takes you off guard, we receive a lot of submissions. However, when this one landed in the inbox there was a sense of intrigue behind the sender, a well versed producer and disc jockey who has been active in dance and electronic music for many years.

Based in Munich he first began to play records in 1987, hip hop and disco took the focus of his musical trajectory but this was soon to be replaced by house and the new wave of electronics which swept its way across Germany. During the nineties he ran a label alongside J.P Hulin called Global Rhythm Records – the music released fetches extravagant sums on Discogs and remains as relevant some twenty years later. Johnny O is The Wolf.

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… who/where/what are you?

Hi, I´m DJ Johnny O aka The Wolf, at days I am a lawyer, at nights I am a Wolf making strange noises and spinning records.

What does your music sound like?

…like treetop animals having fun.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my bedroom

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

On the U6 train riding through Schwabing

What should we be wearing?

Whatever makes you happy

What would be your dream setting to record a mix:

Somewhere with a nice view, a nice crowd and a breeze in the sunshine

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

There are actually quite many favorites in here – old and new ones. The one I loved to play a lot certainly is Ethyéne – Shine On, a perfect blend of disco and house.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Can´t say, there are many. but I kind of going back from time to times listen to my Baldelli and Loda tapes from the 80s, amazing stuff. I still find inspireing tunes and mixes there.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Don´t know, perhaps Dj Duke or Junior Vasquez because i constantly missed them

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Pretty shitty no name mixer with EQ and used turntables I bought from a part time job as a life guard at Michaelibad, then I got me a Rodec and 1210s; today I have a Rane MP2016A

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

For me the starting track, setting the scene

What were the first and last records you bought?

First: Blowfly – Fresh Juice at WOM; last Eko Kuango at Superfly records

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Roasted Marshmallows

If it was an animal what would it be?

See above
