8 Tracks: That Don’t Beat Around The Bush With Athlete Whippet

Music

This weekend Athlete Whippet will appear at Noonday Underground in London. They will play as part of the General Public curated event which will see Let's Go Swimming, Nommo Hunzuu, Crucial & Fresh and Hollick. Athlete Whippet have been receiving praise from the likes of Bicep and beyond. There sound is distinct and forward thinking and we predict the duo to be a pair to watch for the future. We could write a long intro but it might not reflect the theme of their selections terribly well. Let's not beat around the bush, Athlete Whippet sure didn't…

Francis Inferno Orchestra - Take No Time

The lyrics in this say it all already. “I wanna take no time and write this down. I wanna tell you how I feel right now.” Probably one of the most unconventional and best love songs ever. Also love how the sample pulls it out of time and back in.

  • Sandboards | Visa (Feel My Bicep)

The focus here is incredible. You know it’s all about the bass straight away. Not sure how they managed to turn something that could have easily been an X-files OST into this sick tune. Also really nice how lazy the bass sits behind the beat.

  • Dyone | Only Love Will Set U Free (Bicep Remix)

Again, the kind of piano sample which has probably been used a gazillion times before, but still does the job. This is probably one of the tracks that you can’t even pull off 5 minutes before peak time, but if you hit the spot, it’s unbeatable.

  • Andy Hart & Max Graef - Hawker

The master on this is sucking and breathing heavily. It’s like a living being. Love Max Graef’s new stuff that has a lot more crossover quality, but there definitely is a lot of balls to those dance floor bangers he produced in the early days.

  • Ian Pooley - What's Your Number (1996)

This one is much more mellow than the previous ones. Starts with a fiery breakbeat but then actually becomes really laid back and harmonious. SO old school, you can hear the dust on it.

  • Henry Wu "Dubplate Special" - Boiler Room Debuts

An absolute Peckham classic! Sounds like he recruited Thundercat for this one, pretty mean bass.

  • Jtrp - You And Me (Beef Records)

Maybe this ultra masculine video is a bit much, but the track has some serious punch. The whole EP from the German duo is brilliant and this track in particular comes with a Glenn Astro remix that’s just the best!

  • Kyodai - Breaking (12'' - Lt012, Side A) - 2012

Incredible use of live drums in a House tune. Almost feels like one of John Bonham’s on-stage orgasms, but somehow really works.
