Space Is The Place: With Contours

Music

Tom Burford may hail from the damper, wilder corners of northern England but as Contours his musical explorations have ventured far beyond the rugged hills of Cumbria. Now based in Manchester, Burford has been steadily building a name for himself with releases on labels like Shall Not Fade, Rhythm Section and Banana Hill that fuse house, broken beat, jazz and techno that is at home both in sweaty basements and sun drenched terraces alike.

His latest project, Balafon Sketches sees Burford draw on his many years’ experience as a percussionist to create a tapestry of rich polyrhythms and reverb drenched textures that take you far away.

Working with a diverse group of collaborators the album is a breath of fresh air and has dropped on cassette and digital via his Bandcamp page.

Ras G - All Is Well

All is well by the late, great, Ras G is an Afro-futurist odyssey deep into the cosmos. Otherworldly synth lines meander through clattering percussion and thundering sub bass, beautifully evoking the expansiveness of space and other worlds.

  • Steve Reich – Six Marimbas

The constantly evolving patterns and overtones created by the interlocking marimbas create a swell of sound, giving the impression of an ever-expanding environment in which to get lost.

  • Appleblim + Peverelist - Over Here

The sense of space created by the sparseness of rhythm, deep sub and reverb laden chords give this track a particularly cosmic atmosphere. For genuine weightlessness, experience this track in its intended atmosphere: A dark sweaty, basement club with the only illumination piercing the darkness coming from a small red light behind the booth. Classic Skull Disco action!

  • Pharoah Sanders – Greetings To Saud (Brother Mccoy Tyner)

Taken from Pharoah Sanders Elevation album, Greetings to Saud is a journey into cosmic bliss. Chimes, bells, shakers, piano, flute and strings interweave to create a sonic tapestry evocative of the universe and beyond.

  • Motion Graphics - Brass Mechanics

Reverb and delay-soaked clarinet melodies weave in and out of one-another. The brass mechanics of the clarinet’s valve system give the sense of machinery at work, floating effortlessly in zero gravity.
