Video Premiere: Kalbata – Obskuur

Music

Fortuna Records boss Kalbata is launching a brand new label this month called Brush & Broom! It'll act as a platform for "acid and percussion based house and techno", with the first few releases coming from Kalbata himself.

'Obskuur' is the lead track from the new 12", and comes packing some serious old school tribal warehouse vibes. You can watch the video exclusively below. Here's Kalbata describing how it all came together:

"I shot this video in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while on tour in Africa. Over the last couple of years, I've played a few times in Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Africa and had some very intense experiences there. The video was literally shot on the day of my first arrival to Addis and is pretty descriptive of what I was feeling at the time: Total bewilderment. Everything was strange, new, different and alien to most things I knew and have previously experienced. My first experiences in Africa were rolling in front of me as we were driving around town. A very trippy day.

The video was edited by my good friend Keren Arnaldes who runs a photography and art magazine called Milk & Honey. Each issue revolves around a changing theme and their second issue's theme was the word "trip". I showed her the footage and she urged me to give her a track she could edit a video for. I gave her 'Obskuur' and this is the result. It has a very steady pace, no narrative and is quite monotonous, but still full of small details, all laid out in a blur of flickered information, pretty much like that track itself. Try pausing it once in a while and look through these small random windows into Addis Ababa, as seen by a total stranger."

Obskuur is out 29th January on Brush & Broom. Pre-order it here.
