Premiere: Jon Beige – Palo Santo

Music

Monday. 7:27am. A few weak wisps rise up from the toaster, the beige matter inside turning evil charcoal black. Acridity woke the room, and nearly sent it back to bed. The alarm screamed and time was up. Sunday. 9:32pm. An elegant dance of smoke swirled up from the fire, crackling, embering and lightly toasting the shins of its worshippers. Warmth swelled outwards, and gathered bodies in. The breeze moved silently and time was long.

Jon Beige (formerly just Beige) is the next man up on French label, Global Warming. They are familiar with all manner of climates: chilly industrial, steamy techno, wet trap and now thundering dancehall on Beige’s Friendly Surveillance EP. As with his recent releases, including a heavy edit of the Macarena and an EP featuring Acid Arab and Don’t DJ remixes in 2018, he darkens the genre’s usually bright rhythm. He shades it with rugged electronics and dalek-style vocal overdubs, barking maddened rhetoric about the Christian religion. If DAF did dembow this might be the product, left floating somewhere in the cold mid-Atlantic between Europe and the Caribbean.
