Diamont Dancer: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix

Music

A little while ago we stumbled across a beautiful album by an unfamiliar duo – Diamont Dancer are made up of Pau Roca & Nacho Marco and have worked together to produce some of the finest in ambient, drone and experimental in recent times. Drawing influence from the likes of Brian Eno, Alessandro Cortini and John Carpenter they have captured a sound which sits somewhere between the ethereal and the haunting, it is dreamy in parts but comes not without a sinister twist.

This mix series was made very much with the purpose of showcasing music like this, Diamont Dancer as a perfect soundtrack to your Monday. Listen as they select music by  Fennesz & Sakamoto, Biosphere, Sonic Youth and more.

Please introduce yourself…

Hi, we're Diamont Dancer!

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Pau Roca and Nacho Marco, in Valencia, we're an indie guitarist and a house producer, both DJs, who share a common passion in life: music.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

N: This.

[missing]

P: My picture

Where was the mix recorded?

N: At Warm Studio in Valencia.

P: Nacho owns a great studio where we recorded the whole album and the mix.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

N: Driving around Mullholland Drive in the middle of a dark night.

P: With the car stopped in a calm place after recieving an important and terribly good or bad news.

What should we be wearing?

N: Cowboy hats.

P: A coat, because you just got out of the car and turn the volume of the speaker to the maximum.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: location/system/format?

P: In Greenland. I've been there and it's so quiet that, once you've get used to it, you hear lots of noises you didn't realise they where there. That's the perfect state of mind to begin working…

N: Yeah, on Klipschorn speakers and vinyl indeed.

Which track in the mix is your current favorite?

Jonny Greenwood “Tree Strings”, as soon as we listened to it in “You Were Never Really Here” we thought it was exactly the Diamont Dancer type of track, it sounds so much like us.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

X Mix 4 – Dave Angel – Beyond the Heavens

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

N: David Mancuso, to learn from him as much as possible.

P: Maybe to one of the first parties where DJ Yella began.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

NN: two hi fi turntables (without pitch control) and a Tamon mixer back then; Two 1200s, a Roland DJ-808 mixer/controller and 2 Pioneer CDJs now.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

N: Both!

P: The first one.

What were the first and last records you bought?

N: First: Imagination “Just An Illusion” 7”, last: Brian Eno "Music For Installations" box.

P: First: Human League "DARE", last: Tangerine Dream "Exit".

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

N: Butterfish with truffle sushi.

P: French Oysters.

If it was an animal what would it be?

N: A sleeping tiger.

P: A coral reef.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

N: Arthur Russell “World Of Echo".

P: Slayer "Reign In Blood"
