The Heatwave – 8 Tracks

Music

After years of hard graft, heavy remixes and countless dancefloors hyped to madness, The Heatwave have found themselves at the top of the pile – the most in demand bashment party starters in England. Fronted up by one man reggae encyclopedia Gabriel Heatwave, the collective have taken their scandalous dancehall party round the globe, mixing the biggest hits from Jamaica with whichever sounds are running the English dance scene – even creating a few sub genres (funky bashment springs to mind…) along the way. They picked us 8 tracks to reflect their sound

Stone Love - Dubplate Juggling

Stone Love are the Jamaican sound who have most greatly influenced The Heatwave; the way they juggle records was a big inspiration for the way we mix, along with the fact that we grew up with London rave music and the way that was mixed and blended seamlessly. Serious dubplates too.

  • Terror Fabulous & Nadine Sutherland - Action

Nadine Sutherland has a such a great vibe in this video. Hard to watch this and not feel happy. Big up Dave Kelly on the buttons, greatest dancehall producer of all time and a huge influence on The Heatwave.

  • Super Cat, Nicodemus And Junior Demus - Biltmore Ballroom In New York

Super Cat at the height of his powers alongside sparring partners Nicodemus and Junior Demus, backed by Stone Love sound. Exemplary microphone skills from these three, and some of the maddest spontaneous crowd reactions you will ever see.

  • Beenie Man - Who Am I

One of the biggest crossover dancehall hits and still a classic to this day. Dancefloor filler anywhere in the world.

  • David Rodigan Vs Luv Injection - Birmingham 1998

One of the best in the business when it comes to soundclash. Dubplates in the box and mic in hand, very few can test Rodigan. And what a performer!

  • Jah Screechy - Walk & Skank

Huge UK dancehall hit for Jah Screechy in the mid 80s, which was later sampled by SL2 for the chart smash On A Ragga Tip. Unforgettable vocal hook.

  • Chris Goldfinger & Sean Paul On Radio 1

Shout out to Goldfinger for spreading dancehall to a wider audience with his long-running Radio 1 show. Always spreading pure positivity as well and one of the best party DJs out there.

  • Sizzla - Just One Of Those Days

No video, but the best audio: one of the most beautiful songs ever made in any genre, that has prompted countless emotional singalongs at Heatwave parties. This tune was *everywhere* in London during the scorching heatwave of summer 2003 that inspired the name of our first dancehall rave.
