Influences: The Golden Filter

Music

The Golden Filter are releasing a new EP on Optimo Music this Friday! End Of Times follows the electro duo's Still // Alone album which came out on the same label earlier this year. According to the band, the EP "is very Buddhist in its ideas", as it relates to mindfulness and impermanence.

To tie in with the new release, Penelope and Stephen have put together this great Influences feature for us. From Madonna and Neneh Cherry to Chris and Cosey and Chicago footwork, and fascinating interviews with the likes of Grace Jones and Patti Smith, dive in below.

End Of Times is out 10th November on Optimo Music. Pre-order it here.

Grace Jones Interview (1985)

This inspiring interview is pure Grace with so much confidence, attitude, and freedom. Way ahead of her time, she challenges the conservative interviewer with gender perceptions and expectations. Wish we both saw this at 13 while we grew up on opposite sides of the world feeling alienated from small town societal gender norms…

  • The Cure - A Forest (First Ever Tv Performance, Dec '79)

The gritty synth in this is the best part, next to Robert Smith’s trousers. Brilliant performance from a childhood obsession that still influences our music and always will.

  • Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

Somehow this track feels like Neneh took Malcolm McLaren’s great, but bandwagon-jumping ‘Buffalo Gals’ and respectfully threw it back in his face. Neneh’s attitude is so fierce and fresh, even still.

  • Chris And Cosey - Live Vol 1... Side A

Captivating live visuals in this great moody live show from 1988… Chris and Cosey, and everything they’ve been involved in, are a massive influence on us as kids, and now… if that isn’t too obvious.

  • Chicago Footwork

In 2012 we were working on a potential second album in Brooklyn and we were going back to this footwork video a lot, trying to let new influences seep into our sound. We’ve since grown to adore everything about this video and the whole footwork scene. The girl who dances so hard that her shoe falls off is our favourite.

  • Madonna - Everybody (Live At The Danceteria '82)

We have nothing but love for Madonna. We both have been megafans since she started and we still are. Her first performances are eternal reminders to keep confident and move forward.

  • Jimi Hendrix Interview

At 4:45 Jimi explains where you “go when you go” with no sense of doubt at all, and it’s one of the most imaginative, beautiful, and humorous explanations of being on another plane. “Curb service, curb service…”

  • Patti Smith Interview

We are all so lucky to have Patti in this world to share her stories, music, words and experiences as an artist. She’s a constant source of inspiration and gives the most humble and wise advice. The people DO have the power…
