Influences: Pearl City

Music

There's very little information about Manchester-based newcomers Pearl City online. We do, however, know the following for a fact: the duo peddle a visual aesthetic more Lynchian than the work of David Lynch himself, and last year's self-released debut single 'Flames' was quite the introduction. Boasting a production style that occupies a space we didn't know existed between David Longstreth and Ransom Note favourite Tess Roby, an uncommonly captivating vocal hook serves as the cherry atop this unusual cake.

Below, they retrace the steps they took on the route to their singular sound.

Pearl City play Hackney's Paper Dress Vintage on Saturday the 2nd of June: RSVP HERE

Arca - Desafío

I first heard Arca through his work with Björk, his beats, production and soundscaping are out of this world, the sound of the future.

  • Arca - Desafío

I first heard Arca through his work with Björk, his beats, production and soundscaping are out of this world, the sound of the future.

  • Kate Bush - The Sensual World

This is one of the more unorthodox pieces of Kate Bush’s work; its off-kilter melodies and instrumentation mean it shouldn’t be pop, but it is.

  • The Knife - Pass This On

An early Knife track from their first album, which is much more refined and compact then their later material. This tune made me want to start making electronic music.

  • Mssingno - Fones

When I found this song I couldn’t get over it, it’s got a perfect formula.

  • Gangly - Fuck With Someone Else

This is a newish project by Jófríður Ákadóttir, who I’ve been a fan of since hearing the work of her group ‘Samaris’.

  • Björk - Black Lake

Favourite tune from Vulnicura. Björk pours her heart into this song, and you can hear her pain.

  • James Blake - If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead

This is so weird but very good. It feels like James has perfected his old sound.

  • Beach House - Lemon Glow

We have a keyboard with the exact same preset sound as the synth on the intro, it makes me happy to hear it in a track.
