Influences: Nancy Noise

Music

'Balearic Militant' Nancy Noise fell in love with the White Island back in 1986, where she came under the spell of Leo Mas and Alfredo at Amnesia. Charged with finding those musical discoveries on her return to London, she quickly found herself DJing at Future, and later a residency at Ministry Of Sound. Her return trips to Ibiza saw her play at Amnesia, Space and many more. Over the past few years she has played on roof-tops, boat parties and all-day pub raves for Balearicos, Musica Noche, We Are The Sunset and much more. After festival slots across this summer, she is now working on her forthcoming release on Beyond Paradise Recordings, due early next year with remixes from Leo Mas, Man Power and Andrew Weatherall. Ahead of her turn at Farr Festival's show in Shoreditch, she shares a terrific selection and stories to accompany.

Nancy Noise plays Farr Festival at Last Days Of Shoreditch this Saturday 26th November with Daren Nunes, Ma Dahu, Antepop and The Fortune Brothers. Buy tickets here.

Per Qualche Dollaro In Più

We were the kids brought up watching Spaghetti Westerns so then experiencing the incredible music of the Maestro Ennio Morricone .. some of my best loved tracks later used his music & inspiration from those movies. Babe Ruth – The Mexican (which was sampled by so many), Todd Terry – Dreams of Santa Anna, Depth Charge – Bounty Killers … have played these tunes out so much.

  • Kenny Vance With Ismael Miranda - In Havana

I remember my Dad coming home with this album, I thought it was really cool and listened to it a lot, I loved the Mandrill track & the theme tunes with the big electronic synthesiser sound. I played this track over & over & over!!! …… really being into the Latino vibe of it.

  • Cerrone - Music Of Life

This was always being played on the specialists radio shows in London when I was growing up around the Jazz Funk days, it’s one of my most loved tracks ever. I think music like this really influenced me & what I love. This has a bossa /jazz rhythm which are music styles I’ve always adored.
Thinking about how different it was to find a record back then, I never caught the name of this song when I heard it & so never knew who it was by … I always wanted to find it, one day sometime after I went to a record shop and was singing it (well trying to!!) to the guys behind the counter who were staring blankly at me. Then a guy in the shop taps me on the shoulder & nods towards the door. So I follow him outside & he opens his bag where there was about 5 copies of the same record … he says “I got that track you want, just got these in New York” it was Cerrone – Cerrone IV – The Golden Touch …. I gave him a tenner & skipped home very happily that day!!!

  • Bunny Mack - Let Me Love You

When I was growing up this track was massive in the area I’m from in London, it was played at loads of parties.
I love the vibe it creates & everything about it …. think hearing & dancing to music like this really influenced my musical tastes and what I’ve played as a DJ. Still love playing this out!! o/ o/

  • Double - Woman Of The World (Extended Version)

The first time I spent the whole summer in Ibiza was 1986 where I discovered Amnesia … what Alfredo & Leo Mas played in there was such a massive influence in my life, as later it lead onto me becoming a DJ … this is one of the tracks from that summer …. the warm sound, guitar riffs, infectious bassline, all the sounds in it have so much atmosphere …. as soon as I hear this I’m back in Amnesia … it’s crazy .. the power of music.
Other tracks that summer by It’s Immaterial, Art of Noise,Liaison Dangereuses, Yello, Henri Mancini & they way they played them inspired me endlessly … then more inspiration from them the following summer .. gracias para siempre .. mi maestros!!

  • Paco De Lucía - Entre Dos Aguas

This is another track I heard Leo Mas & Alfredo playing in Amnesia in 1986-87 & think it was probably played at cafe del mar too .. so beautiful.
I love flamenco music, it’s been a big influence on the style of the records that I love to play.
The way it builds is spectacular!! I had fallen in love with this track in Ibiza & when I got back to London was buzzing about it, I took it round to Youth’s to play it to him, we messed about in the studio with it & made a track sampling bits. I could listen to this on repeat forever!! thank u Paco de Lucia .. Maestro! Virtuoso!

  • Andreas Vollenweider - Down To The Moon

First heard these at the cafe del mar … What a privilege it was being there & being exposed to such wonderful music.
It was where we hung out, our meeting place …. playing backgammon, watching the sunset or spaced out on the cushions upstairs!!!
… Always had a big love for these tracks … the Down to the Moon album by Andreas Vollenweider is truly lovely … this music takes me off somewhere … blissful.

  • Milton Nascimento - Clube Da Esquina - Lilia

Brazilian music fills me with so much joy ……. trying to choose one track is quite a task ..
Milton Nascimento has the voice of an angel, I love the hypnotic psychedelic feel of this. The whole album by Lo Borges & Milton is a thing of beauty.
I have so much respect for DJs like Giles Peterson, Nicola Conte, Gerardo Frisina & DJ Cliffy for their knowledge & the many labels that release the new & re release so much amazing music .. Obrigado!!!

  • Bonobo - El Toro

I’m influenced by beautiful music all the time … this is a perfect example …. I’ve always loved different hip hop beats .. breakbeats .. crazy drums patterns … this has that & much more .. amazing tune by Bonobo.

  • The Graduate 1967 Silence Of Sound And April Come She Will Scene Low

I’ve always loved this film, everything about it …. of course the music from Simon & Garfunkel is totally sublime!
This scene is genius, amazing …. I think we are all influenced big time by movies … this one just blew me away …..
