Influences: Illum Sphere

Music

Ryan Hunn is an artist who has not always perhaps received the acclaim or praise that he deserves. Since 2009 he has remained within the shadows of UK club culture and its music, Achieving more than most he rose to prominence during the era of 'post dubstep' and 'future bass': two terms which have continued to haunt electronic music ever since. However, what is perhaps the most distinctive aspect of his career to date is his evolution in sound, growing up in public he has developed not only his own production style but has experimented and educated himself before the watchful eye of overs.

His latest album 'Glass' demonstrates how far he has come in the eight years that he has been releasing music. Now focusing on a rougher, edgier techno driven sound he has truly evolved into an independent artist, producer and innovator in his own right. We caught up with Illum Sphere to talk influences…

Dabrye - In Water

Without a doubt the track that had the single biggest influence on what I wanted to do. The album it’s taken from, ‘Two/Three’, changed a lot for me, and Tadd Mullinix is still someone I look up to massively, across all his aliases.

  • Dabrye - In Water

Without a doubt the track that had the single biggest influence on what I wanted to do. The album it’s taken from, ‘Two/Three’, changed a lot for me, and Tadd Mullinix is still someone I look up to massively, across all his aliases.

  • Liaisons Dangereuses - Avant-Après Mars

Another album that really changed the way I thought about making music, albeit it not as far back. This opened up a whole world of music that I’d never come across before and became such an important and essential record for me. I could have picked any track from it.

  • The Scientist - Dangerous Match One

I think this is one of the first Scientist things I heard. It might not be that obvious, but the likes of him and Tubby definitely influenced certain things in my music.

  • Harold Mcnair - The Hipster (1968)

Some of my older stuff had nods to jazz and I think it’s mainly down to this. I often tried to get across the energy from ‘The Hipster’, a bit chaotic and intense. Another track that possibly came from is John Klemmer’s ‘Free Soul’. However, I think it’s something hard to capture in a more restricted electronic setting as opposed to a live jazz one.

  • Lab Rat Xl ?- Lab Rat 1

Discovering the various projects and aliases of Drexciya was such an exciting and rewarding time. I could pick numerous moments from the various projects but I think the real influence of projects like Lab Rat XL are starting to seep into my music. This one was a solo project of James Stinson released in 2003.

  • Theo Parrish - Lights Down Low (Full Mix)

Probably the first Theo record I bought and definitely one that had a massive effect on the way I play and make music.

  • The Impossible Dreamers - Spin

I can still remember hearing this for the first time and one that never gets boring. I’d love to do a project on this kinda vibe one day.

  • Musik Von Harmonia - Watussi - 1974

Musik von Harmonia is one of my favourite albums of all time and I could have picked any track from it. Everything about this record is just incredible, even the cover.
