Floating Points – King Bromeliad (Eglo)

Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points needs no introduction and is an all time fav of mine. He just seems to have that knack of making effortless, slow burning, soul drenched house music. His latest effort on Eglo sees him still on top of his game and I can’t recommend it strongly enough.

The EP opens with the title track which eases us into the action slowly. We kick off with some backroom ambience and the groove just builds out of that. The track is a meandering 8 minutes 52 with wonderfully lazy drums and an understated hook that opens up perfectly at just the right moment. Beautiful. On the flip “Montparnasse” is another extended slow jam clocking in at an impressive 14 minutes odd but length isn’t everything. This track has a more melancholic feel to it but still with all of the quality of the flip. I think my copy has the labels on the wrong way round but I’m going to try to refrain from writing an angry letter to my MP about it.

Shlømo – Rechaïm EP (Bright Sounds)

Bright Sounds are relative newcomers as far as labels go. This is the Berlin imprint’s 3^rd release so far and sees them continuing in their vein of atmospheric, textural techno. It’s also very good. Shlømo hails from Paris where he runs the Taapion label and he’s pretty much a perfect fit for Bright Sounds.

Across the 4 tracks Shlømo keeps to bright and open textures; slowly evolving, deeply layered.  All of the tracks put you in a lovely trance like state but it’s the final track “Theory Is The Worst” that has the most movement and direction. This is quality dub techno. One minor annoyance was that I had to find how to do an ø and an ï on my keyboard but I took it on the chin and I feel I’ve learned something so I’m happy.

K15 – Bordeaux (WotNot Music)

A new name for your radars folks – well a new name on mine but you’re probably all well ahead of me. I heard this a couple of weeks back and it’s really stuck with me. K15 is a London based producer who’s productions fall into that really interesting area of jazz infused house music that’s not afraid to not quite fit in and you can see why he’s been picked up by Wild Oats for a double 12 later this year. All of the four tracks offer something different so I’m not going to pick favourites. “Bordeaux” has a perfect swing to it and meandering synth line to loose your fonk to. Kaidi Taitham’s mix of the aforementioned takes things dramatic and breaks the beats. “Hall of Memories” goes deep and finally the Glenn Astro and IMRRMIND remix is rough as fuck. Great release.

Finally given this a listen and it sounds all the better in the ethereal early morning light as swallows swoop around my window. Woozy, instrumental, electronic pop on the ever dependable Atomnation.
