Hieroglyphic Being – The Disco's of Imhotep (Technicolour)

The Chicago dreamer Hieroglyphic Being is nothing if not prolific. Over the past 8 years Jamal Moss has dropped release after release of forward thinking, fiercely individual music that takes house and techno as a starting point, but is by no way constrained by its conventions or strictures. There are a lot of artists who are proclaimed to not be constrained by genres but, for the most part, these plaudits are not truly warranted. For this guy though you can rest assured that this is not hyperbole.

So with that said it was hugely exciting to see that Mr Moss has teamed up with the Ninja Tune offshoot to release a full length LP. And the results are hugely pleasing. Over the course of the 9 tracks we veer from warm, bright house workouts to dark, clanging noisescapes. On the way we take in spacious ambient tracks and crushing techno jams. The opening number, “The Shrine of the Serpent” is soft and dreamy, making you want to melt on the spot. Other highlights include “Spiritual Alliances” which is a punchy but laid back house pumper and “The House of KMT” which is a jagged and jarring workout that brooks no argument. This is a fantastic album.

Adjowa – Heartstrung EP (Happy Skull)

The Bristolians are at it again. Happy Skull bring up their 10th release with this absolute gem of a release by one time Ransom Noter Adjowa. Yeah all the ones with any talent leave as soon as they bloody can. Three excellent, lo-fi-yet-funky-nice jams that sway from wistful to dubby to boogie-laced goodness that you should definitely check out.

TB Arthur – Psychedelic Relics (312)

I first came across the illusive windy city acid freak TB Arthur via his excellent release on Argot last year  and he has been busy ever since, digging out old DATs, playing live and working on new tracks This latest 12”, dropping on his own imprint 312, is 100% new material. And it's fucking brutal. Punishing acid bangers whose focus is purely on the body. And making it jack. From what I can tell this guy has a lot of projects coming up so keep your eyes peeled. Parlez Vous Acid? You what?

Teaspoon and the Waves & Nzimande Allstars – Soweto Disco (Sofrito Super Singles)

This absolute gem of a record has just been repressed. If, like me, you missed out on it when it dropped a few years back then shame on you if you miss it again. Raw, joyous afro-disco grooves straight out of South Africa. This is a very funky record indeed.

NHK YX KOYZEN – Doom Steppy Reverb (Diagonal)

The catchily named Japanese artist NHK YX KOYZEN returns to Diagonal records for a 7 track LP of seriously warped techno and it's definitely worth checking out. This is not expansive, washy soundscapes and deep, groovy basslines. The feel is insular, neurotic, paranoid and off kilter, but expertly executed. We're not talking abstract, wig out material either, while the feel may be unsettling, it still makes you want to dance. A lot. This is a great record.
