Music

Institut für Zukunft resident and Leipzig-based artist Perm returned to Dresden label shtum earlier this month with a brand new four track EP. On a slightly different tip, the master techno craftsman has now put together this brilliant selection of "Music To Waste Your Youth To". Covering the disaffected teenager spectrum from anarcho-punk to thrash metal, dig in below.

Slime - Karlsquell

This song is like a love song to a canned beer called Karlsquell formerly available at Aldi (a German discounter). They sing about all the advantages this beer has, such as if the can is empty it can be used as a nice ashtray.

  • Schleim-Keim - In Der Kneipe Zur Trockenen Kehle

Schleim-Keim is a punk band from the former GDR. The title means something like “in the pub to the dry throat“. It’s about frustration because of working in the factory and drinking after shift ends.

  • Chaos Z - 1981

They existed from 1980 to 1983 and were (in my opinion) quite hard compared to other German punk bands from this period (except of maybe Vorkriegsjugend). After Chaos Z they founded Fliehende Stürme which was a bit more influenced by wave music.

  • Ea80 - Marquee

This band has been active since 1979, so they’re one of the longest existing punk bands from Germany. This song is from their first single released in 1982. It’s one of my all-time favourite punk records and it was really hard to choose just one of the tracks (so if you like it listen to the others as well!)

  • Rudimentary Peni - The Cloud Song

At the age of 16 I went to some little punk concert. Afterwards we kept on drinking and someone put on a record by Rudimentary Peni. For the next few weeks it was the only record I was listening to. I still like the record but especially this song, even in times when I’m not listening to that much punk rock. I think the band is from England and related to the Anarchopunk scene.

  • Amebix - Nobody's Driving

Most songs by Amebix have a “heavy atmosphere“ – it sounds like you can hear the cold war fear. They were quite important for other musical styles like crust punk and thrash metal with their blend of anarcho-punk and heavy-metal.

  • Cress - Tv Screen

Not to be confused with Crass. Cress used a drum computer instead of a real drummer. They’re also from the UK and related to the anarcho scene.

  • His Hero Is Gone - Monuments To Thieves

They are from the US and the band members were/are also active in a couple of other bands like Tragedy and From Ashes Rise. His Hero Is Gone is my all-time favorite Crust Punk band and I’ve chosen this song just because it was the first that came into my mind. All records by them are great and worth listening to!
