8 Tracks: Matthew Styles’ 8 Tracks Of Style

Music

Those familiar with Berlin-based Matthew Styles know that he comes armed with a meticulous musical style that cherry picks underground bombs from 'cross decades. As former label manager of Crosstown Rebels, Styles shaped and sculpted the first five years of the label’s existence, playing an essential role in raising the label to the revered status it enjoys today. The Crosstown alumni he signed attests to this, with gems from a few names you may have heard of – the likes of Seth Troxler’s The Royal We, Radio Slave (Canvas), Josh Wink, Mr G, Matthew Jonson, Freaks and Rob Mello.

Now, fresh off the back of curating the third disc of Crosstown Rebels' Rebel Rave Series, he talks us through a selection of sounds that throb with that most indefinable, crucial of essences: style. Prepare to shimmy.

Matthew Styles Rebel Rave Mix is out now via Crosstown Rebels. See him at the NoFitState Bank Holiday special at Shapes, Hackney on 24th May – grab your tickets here.

Arthur Russell - Let's Go Swimming - Lr1002

I could just make a list of Arthur Russell records with style, he had it pouring out of every orifice. So many greats, but this one has such a beautiful innocence combined with futuristic rhythms.

  • Arthur Russell - Let's Go Swimming - Lr1002

I could just make a list of Arthur Russell records with style, he had it pouring out of every orifice. So many greats, but this one has such a beautiful innocence combined with futuristic rhythms.

  • Sound Patrol - Tripping Among The Stars (A Necessary Journey)

Again you could make a list of only Derrick Carter records, the man had such a fertile period in the 90’s. This is just a beautiful record.

  • Alessandro Novaga - Eletronic Drums

Just a record of 4 bar loops, over and over, but those rhythms were a blueprint for House.

  • Brooklyn Express- Change Position (88) (Special Disco Mix - Spank)

A super classy disco mashup produced by Tee Scott. Guaranteed to start the party!

  • Baby Ford - One For Sorrow (Main)

Peter Ford is a hypnotist and because of that I’m still a true believer in minimalism, despite the horrors of the “minimal explosion” in the 00’s.

  • Maurizio - M4

    Real Trance.

  • This Side Up - Trance

I heard this record for the first time when I was 15 on a mix and looked for it for over 20 years, never hearing it anywhere else or knowing what it was. It was a great moment of satisfaction of finally finding it, after Slam put it on a “classics” mix. The beauty is that this record works so well and people hear the magic that I did all those years ago.

  • Vietnamese Spring Roll Recipe : How To Wrap Spring Rolls

Is this cheating? My wife has a lot of style and I admire so many of her records. She knocked this album out on an MPC while living in New York. So many perfect atmospheres on this album, it’s quite timeless.
(There is no YouTube video for this, just a link here – we’ve included a guide to making spring rolls to help educate you!)
